Its a fair comment, but with a forum this size its unreasonable to expect 1 or 2 people to do all that is necessary to keep it running smoothly.
As long as there is a clearly defined chain of command, assistants work well for daily ongoing stuff.
RS246 Crew
It's actually a view that John and I share, so very welcomed as a topic for discussion.NeilMc wrote:I don't know if my point of view will be a popular one, but I think the fewer people you have to run something, the more efficiently it works. You just have less people to disagree with. And if having a small number of crew members means that the site goes in a direction that the users aren't happy with, they already have a great forum to discuss their issues with it.

So far as moderation, I'd say a site this size and exisiting members doesn't need much moderation or many moderators. Always good to have a couple mind to get good coverage as it were. Most common moderation task simply shuffling posts about to the right section as people always get it wrong. A couple of mods with enough permissions to shuffle any post to any section and I expect most of the work (moderation) in hand.
In terms of deciding what direction for the site should go in, how it is run and how it is funded, that is for the owners to decide. Having said that, those decisons obviously impact the "users" of the website.
I am trying to keep an open mind. I have great respect for DavidT, a real gentleman and also MarkB, recently caught in the fire it seems. I can also understand perhaps Phil and JR being wary of such a massive undertaking such as RS246 live. I can understand them also wanting final say and cancelling if they felt it the right call.
My concern is one I have felt before and that is, depsite them just saying it, do Phil and JR really want the best for RS246? Do you still have a passion for these cars? The car owners we have here, old and new generation cars love this site for the help, the ideas and the like minded people and the events. Do you still have an interest in all this? Do you enjoy it?
It quite often comes accross like you don't enjoy it. More often than not it comes accross like you are sick of it and it's some sort of burden.
If this is the case, I have to suggest you get out (as it were), move on to another project, sell it, take a back seat, something.
If I have it all wrong, lets hear your plans for how you want to run the site. Keeping the events in easilly achievable boundaries, lets look forward to a GTG at Mallory on the 17th (as has been opffered) and be planning ahead to a "club" stand at GTI International. None of this we are not a club, do you expect me to sit at a marquee all day and it's along way to go and sit in the mud. SOme enthusiasm, planning, ideas and looking ahead.

Rest assured that each time you logon to RS246 it is because there are still people who care about this site and those involved. We plan to continue doing the events we have done in the past, and you may even see RS246 Live 2009 appear in the calendar for next year.
You don't need to be a site owner, or in the Crew for that matter, to organise meets; events however require funds, so we need to be careful that those funds don't run out or are put at risk.
Moderating - The site has a search facility, why not use that? As more people use the site, there are more and more off topic posts and threads. Can't this be moderated by the users, does it really need someone to move it to the right place?
In our opinion it would be really nice to see the site moderate itself as much as possible. It will be testing times in the short term as we overcome change.
I do hope to be at Mallory and have a chat with those of you who wish it. Hell, if you really want to I could try to setup a Q&A session there.
