going on my experience BT were a fecking head ache and I gave up with them in the end, my mate also tried them and although he is still using them has problems now and again, mind you some of that may be the user, he is not very cometant on the old PC

With regards to the others I have heard good thinks of blue yonder and tiscalli but had now personal experience

I believe aol just use BT or NTL with a different modem

I currently use NTL cable with 1meg connection, no problems here

Hope this helps, good luck

Cheers

Same here, BT has been OK. Unless you experience problems with the BT software, then the hardware on ADSL is virtually identical, as is the landline network back to the DSLAM in the local BT exchange. What sort of BT problems have you had Bushy?

I've had the BT plug & go broadband for the last 18 months and I can't fault it. Very very rarely not available, about twice in the last 1.5 years and that was only for about 10 minutes.
The only issue I had was having to cancel and re-start the contract when I recently moved. Bit of a pain the way you have to do it and was without broadband for nearly 4 weeks but got free dial up...

If you want a higher download speed than 512k, then it might be worth looking somewhere other than BT like Blue Yonder 1meg.

I use Via Net.Works ADSL - cost £25.00 +VAT/month. Not as well known a some - they tend to cater for the business user which is good as there is less contention. Very good service, with the normal odd blips, but generally reliable. ALso good techie back up if needed.

I am using BT, and whilst it may not be the cheapest, until the broadband market stabilizes in the UK, you could do a lot worse than go with them. Imagine the scenario where your line is down and you then have to chase Tiscalli who will then chase BT, who with then report back to Tiscalli etc... Sorry, I would prefer to speak directly with the 'owners' of the copper wire and pay the extra £2 per month. NTL cable is a different proposition - once again, my advice would be to sign a contratc with whomever owns the cable and not a third party. With respect to broadband hardware, I chose to purchase my own PCI broadband modem for £25 and it works fine - depends on your personal circumstances i.e. multiple PC's, wireless LAN.

Make sure you get a good firewall - even if it's a software jobbie.

Im using Pipex and they have been great.

Have a read around the forums etc on www.ADSLGUIDE.ORG.UK

They also run a refer a friend program, which, when you refer your friends and family you can earn free months broadband.

their modem and free activation is £17 ish inc vat, and your not tied to a 12 month policy either.

If you go that way, PM me, before you fill in the form, and ill send my details to refer you.

Blueyonder 1Mb here. Cooking on gas

You can buy a 'pipe' the size of the Dartford tunnel, but you are still limited to the speed of the slowest 'hop'. I often get 74kbps download speeds, but it can also be as low as 4kbps on a multi-hop connection. Also, you will be sharing said 'pipe' with everyone else in your street, so if they're all surfing at the same time, your download rate will plummet - read the small print.

get out clause - this does not apply for dedicated connections i.e. leased lines etc...

The 'contention ratio' where I am appears to be fairly low. It is rare that I see speeds of less than 120kbps.

8 x 120 = 960KBps

I'm happy with that. The user has no control over the number of hops, this is all down to cost routing on the backbone.

I think I will move to SDSL, as soon as the prices become more competitive.

Same here, I've just noticed they have started running a 2mb connection, anybody gone for it? how much extra is it a month?
Too much is bad.
Plenty is better.
