Oil

Post by DickyC » Wed Apr 09, 2008 10:43 am

A whole new can of worms for you.

Carrying on the car's Audi service history, I had it serviced and MoT'd at Audi Newbury. And I forgot to specify the oil. The previous owner had Listers (Audi Coventry) service it for years and they used a semi synthetic.

Audi Newbury used VW group's Quantum. There's no mention of synthetic, but the spec is very high and lists on the container all the likely cars you can use it in.

Under intense questioning the mechanic said it's what they use for the high powered cars unless told to do something different.

Anyway, it performs fine but whereas the previous owner said it used very little oil and didn't require any between services, I'm up to a litre every 3,000 miles. Not bad for a 135K car, but considerably higher than with the semi-synthetic.

Any thoughts?

Dicky C

(The car's previous owner, Neil Lefley, is an interesting chap, look him up on the internet. If you don't go straight to him, try adding Trident, Muira or 365 GTC to your search criteria)

Many discussion on the best oil for the RS2 on many Forums over Europe...

They all summed up that Castrol RS 10/60 it's the best allover.
Personally i use that every oil change since 1997 on my RS2 and i'm still happy with it.

Don't go on too fluid oils like Mobil 1 0/40 or similar values because they're good for more modern motors not for our IL 5 cylinders you'll end up having higher oil consumption.

hmm I have run my RS2 since new on Mobil 1 0-40W and do not have any oil consumption issues - on the last two oil changes I have changed this to Mobil 1 15-50W Motorsport not because of oil consumption but because you get less tappet noise with a thicker oil.

Thanks for that scillyisles. (Don't live near Thames Ditton, do you?)

Mobil 1 was the oil I had in mind and then forgot to ask for.

The Quantum they put in is 15/40 and behaves okay apart from the fact that it diminishes. There's no smoke and no drips, but it's going somewhere.

i also have it in a highly tuned mk2 golf and other than a slight oil leak now and again it also runs fine!

When i was in Greece i used castrol 10W60.No problems. However here in the UK with the low temps, i noticed that the car kind of struggled when cold and also took quite a while to actually get a bit warmer. So i tried on my recent oil chance the Silkolene 10W50 and i can say that for these temps, this oil is much better. The car is more lively now and the normal operating temps are more easily reached.

I had about 300ml consumption with the castrol on a 30.000Kms engine(rebuilt) @ 7500Kms.I will note what the consumption will be with this one,but i dont really expect any big difference

www.opieoils.co.uk

Forum discount available with these guy's.
Oilman from above business posts on S2 forum. Plenty of info on correct oils to use.

Silkolene Pro S 10W50 ester synthetic is his recommendation for RS2.

Doug from MRC say's Quantum Synta Gold is fine as long as the car is not thrashed or tracked.

Hi,

I spoke with Opie Oils and after they had listened to my uses for my RS2 recommended Silkolene Pro S 5W40 ester synthetic, which is good for cold starts. My car was serviced a month ago so its a little too early to comment on oil consumption.

They are well worth a call and a chat.

Cheers,

Simon

I would second that. I have tried them all.
