Venting In Under Arch Cover.

Post by Chubby » Wed Sep 24, 2003 1:15 pm

Has anyone seen or heard of cutting the inner front arch cover to allow more air to flow through the coolers and then to the brakes.

Also the oil temp. never seems to rise above 95 even when given a good tonking, when the S4 used to rise to about 120?

I presume the vents are there to vector the flow of air towards the discs? By removing these you may actually reduce the cooling effect to the brakes not increase it, there may be more air flow but it is not concentrated at the discs!

RS4 has an extra oil cooler. I plan on adding it to my S4.

Have a look at S4/RS4 on www.vagparts.com for details.

In fact it is the opposite to venting the discs.

Basically the air flow over the intercoolers is restricted firstly by the fog lights restricting air in then secondly in the arch area with the louvres attempting to reduce water and dirt from the wheel

In my personal experiences the temp on the track and under heavy charlie big potatoes style driving was just over 120, by removing the fogs and fitting the sportec grills has meant it runs just under 120, and on cool down laps the oil temp cools quicker. Also for standard drib=ving the oil is aroun80, not the standard 90 it was before

I think this would be further reduced by aiding exit air flow and I have seen a few different attempts at removing a section of inner arch and fitting a mesh grill to stop stones and debris damaging the ICs. I personally have not done it yet but do planning on doing so

The increasedarea will decrease the air temperature flowing over the discs which in turn should aid braking

I am also considering using a porshe duct system to force air into the centre of the disc as IMHO the air inside the rim will not refresh enough to cool the brakes unless forced to do so

Hope this makes it as clear as mud

Cheers

Hey mate, good to see you on RS246

I think the main reason that this has not yet been done is that the air flowing over the intercoolers and then thru the new vents in the inner wheel arch would be quite hot ie. because of the intercoolers, and the general concensus is that hot air over the brakes wouldn't be productive.

Have you got RS4Steve's car btw, coz that is something I'm sure he did on his, and if so we would like to hear your thoughts on any benefits

I actually think it would be a good idea

the reason i believe is that if you force in say 5 cubic metres of air to an IC causing it to say raise to 100 degrees the air will be forced out like a hot air dryer at 100 deg

If you increase the area, the air flow may increase to say 7 cubic metres, the air would then only heat to say 80 deg and would be not such a directive blast on the brakes so it should do two things, 1) increase cooling and 2) not heat the brakes so much

Just my mindless babling you understand but it may just work, anyone out there more qualified to comment?

Hi Guy's, thanks for the welcome.

I'm not new to the site, had a S4 which some git decided to set on fire. Have now got the RS4, which has these grills, see pic.

Definitely looks like Steve's old car, that is exactly what he did

Has it got the MTM458 upgrade or did he remove it?

I am sure he sold the AP racing brakes from it so I suppose he put it back to standard, less the wheel arch grills?

Can't remember who's name was on the log book, it was first own by Bently Cars, would like to have a word with the person who tried to cut the TV censor wire and then re-connect via a switch with 13amp socket wire.

I bought the car through Lomand Audi, and so far have nearly re-built the damn thing.

Looks good now though...

Am going to the Audi Driving thing at Castle Coombe, if anyone wants to see it. Can't make the trip to Germany this year as am diving in the Red Sea.

Rebuilt it?

Like what?

I thought his car was good, no problems. He lived in the Birmingham area but dont know where it was sold to

He was quite a good driving too, didnt believe in high revs, just around 4k in the power band, which is unusual for us nutters

Still has the MTM upgrade, but has been back to Millek, who live just around the corner, to get the exhaust sorted so it doesn't stick have way down the motorway, it is having the inner arch covers replaced today FOC, new barkes and disc's, also FOC, has had whole front end re-painted, including side skirts, so it now looks like new!!!
