camBELTED S4 B5 :-(

Post by grgh » Wed Mar 19, 2008 2:26 pm

Anybody know of an S4 B5 engine for sale in the Slough / High Wycombe / West London kinda area?

My S4 had a terminal cambelt failure last week and I'm looking into the feasibility of recovering it either through engine replacement or possible fixing.

Alternatively, is anyone looking to purchase an S4 B5 that doesn't currently run?
- W reg showing 138k miles
- black
- 265bhp
- manual 6 speed, of course
- 4 new tyres about a month ago
- 17" avus alloys, but assume they all need reconditioning (dodgy kerbs outside my house!)
- Xenon headlamps and headlamp washers
- Full leather interior with carbon graphite trim, sports leather steering wheel & sports seats
- 6 CD multichanger
- plus all the other usuals

There is a ding in the strip above the rear numberplate.
The drivers door is out of line because I used to let it drop open!

Cheers, George.

Unfortunately I'm mechanically illiterate myself.

Actually I was directed to this forum through this, which is a fair way from me in Liverpool :

I think by the time I got it down here, the costs would be getting to much.

you'd have to buy on trust but only £50ish for a palet delivery with UK, find an engine get quote for palet, might save u getting rid of a nice motor

I had it into Audi Slough, so they of course quoted 7k for a new engine. My knowledge ends at cam belt broken and things are bent.

As far as I know it was the original cambelt at 138k miles :( Yes I know, shoot me, but I'd never had a cambelt go on me before and didn't know it could be so catastrophic. Everyone I've spoken to seems to have experienced this at some point, but it was a first for me.

Ok thats interesting, thanks for that, I expected it to cost a lot more than that. I'm assuming the engine is detached from the car as part of the price quoted, even though the pic seems to show it still installed.

I'd certainly like to have it running, it's always been an absolute blast even though unmodified. I thought it might be an opportunity to make some 'changes'...

for peace of mind, you'd want to at least get the heads off to have a look and maybe a bit of a rebuild, if the wallet can take the bashing.

your turbos might need a rebuild with that mileage and would definetly be silly not to with the engine out, 40 hours labour to get em out and back in so not cheap to go back. Have you got a budget in mind, could spend anything depending on required power.

The 7K Audi quoted could be spent getting you a 450bhp monster

At this stage I'd definitely be tempted. I've been driving my S4 for 3.5 years and I'm still not tired of it. Now with a book value of only a few 'k', I could be tempted to wind it up a bit.

Do you know any places that would do the whole lot, from getting the thing back working as well as tuning it up?

I know the question of insurance costs are often passed over  but is it still possible to get a decent quote with a modded car?

Cheers, George.
