Windscreen cracked !

Post by hbk » Sun Mar 16, 2008 10:48 pm

Very weired, on the way up to Leeds on Saturday on the M1, suddenly a 4.5inch crack appeared on my windscreen (Nr right hand corner), no stones, just happened...

Has this happened to anyone else, need to get Autoglass in via my insurance company to replace it.

Cheers
Howard

Yep, I had exactly the same thing, crack spreading down from top drivers side, no stone chips or any other damage.

Audi replaced it under warranty......amazingly.

make sure they fit an Audi one ...

... as aside I have very little time for Autoglass ... a goon cracked mine a while back and then I had to make sure they did not claim on my insurance ...Also they sent a bloke to my house to fit a new one ... he poooed his pants and declined to do it .....

Had two windsceens. First crack nearside bottom corner after 3rd day of ownership, no chips, just stright into a 6" crack. Dealership just said hard luck, claim on insurance. Second crack 6000 ish miles, most probably a stone. Both times used Autoglass, found them quick and efficient. Cost me £50 excess each time.

I had a screen go at the top centre - no stone chip. It was replaced under warranty.

I don't think that the issue is using Autoglass or another - the issue is to insure that you get a genuine Audi screen rather than someone else's.

Be very careful having autoglass do it. I would suggest seeing who your local audi dealer use first.

I had a stone hit the screen yesterday and now have large spider-shaped cracks at the bottom centre. Its a goner.

To get a replacement through my insurance costs £70 in excess. To get it done by Audi dealer non-insurance is £270. My insurance company (Bell) uses National Windscreens as one of their two repairer agents. Anyone had any experience of them?

Do the likes of Autoglass, National Windscreens etc use genuine OEM parts and if you insist on a genuine Audi replacement screen is this reflected in additional cost over and above the excess you pay?

My gut feel says take it to the dealer (Camberley) and get it done properly.. at the least by a windscreen repairer that is familiar with Audi's and uses genuine parts.

Cheers
Sean

I had my glass sorted by Autoglass and they ordered the glass direct from Audi and I have to say, they were superb.

In the end, it was a chip, but it was so small, it's amazing how the glass cracked.
