My RS4 Cab now has Voice Recognition

Post by Love_iTT » Tue Mar 11, 2008 7:41 pm

When I ordered this car I opted not to have the telephone prep ( I didnt want the phone mounted on the dash nor in the central armrest but I wanted the RS4 steering wheel and not the multi-function wheel so that left me without bluetooth functions and speech recognition. A bit strange you may think for choice but speech recognition is not fitted - even as an option - on RS4 Cabriolets, only on saloons and Avants.

Not now though :P

I had the bluetooth module retro fitted last year by Craigyb which enabled the use of the phone (I just keep that in my jacket) but today I went to Manchester to see Craig again. I had ordered a CANgate module from a guy in the US and also an extra switch to replace the only blank I have on the dash (I used the 'Sport' button as it has an 'S' on it - for 'Speech' so that it would look a standard fitment).

It took Craig about two hours to install including a software update for the RNS-E, it booted up in the default German language to begin with but after a minor adjustment of the settings we had a working voice recognition system. Craig did a fantastic job of the install.

I had a good play with it on the way home and I must admit it is a brilliant retrofit install, you would not know any difference looking inside the cabin area - no loose wires or odd brackets stuck on the dash but the best part is that it makes driving so much safer now. CD, MP3 SD cards, Radio, Telephone, Satalite Navigation and TV   are all controlled through speech now rather than pressing a selection of various buttons.

To get the full functionality of the phone, I will have to store the names and numbers into the unit rather than using the phone book in the phone but that's not a problem, at the moment for example, I have to speak the full number rather than just say "Home".

I want to say 'Thanks' to Dave (PetrolDave) for the encouragement and help he gave me before I decided to go ahead with this, he helped a huge amount.

All in all, a great result and really pleased with it. Next step is maybe a 500-750gb media player working through the TV unit - but that's another story

I have been thinking of doing the same - this is a very good mod, just need to plan a visit to CraigyB. :thumb:

What are the costs involved in getting the button and CANgate Graham?

Graham, where did you order it from? Is it a complete kit and just need Vag-Com to complete the retro-fit? Thanks.

No it's not a complete kit. The CANGate has to be ordered from the guy in the US who makes them as a sideline business, and the switch you order from your local Audi dealer (mine took 2 days to arrive).

Yes, you do need to do some recoding with VAG-COM if you have the phone kit fitted.

Your RS4 should have a bluetooth module fitted already as IIRC it was standard equipment, can you not pair your phone with the device with ignition switched on?

Sorry to contradict you P_G but the Bluetooth module was NOT standard equipment on the RS4.

My RS4 didn't come with a Bluetooth module because I didn't order either of the Audi phone packages - because I wanted to keep the RS4 steering wheel which you can't do with either of the Audi options as they both replace the RS4 wheel with an MFSW.

Basically if you've got the RS4 steering wheel you haven't got a Bluetooth module (unless you've had it retrofitted).

It may be because I had the RS4 steering wheel and cradle option then, the cradle I got rid of. My misreadng of the brochure then.

Shame for pippyrips because getting rid of the cradle is a lot cheaper than retrofitting a bluetooth module.

Are you saying that you have the RS4 wheel (flat bottom) plus a bluetooth prep phone facility?

Should this not read
