RS4 Engine Rebuild for big power using a Garrett Kit

Post by viperbl » Sat Feb 23, 2008 2:03 am

So, the turbo fairy came to visit me last month ... ended up throwing a blade due to over spooling so the turbo people tell me :( Maybe 1.9 bar was too much for those KO4/RS6 Hybrids, or maybe I had a leak, but either way, it was the RAC back home ...

Anyway, what to do ... replace them? or, no wait, why not take the engine out and start to dismantle it! yeah, that’s a good idea!

So, that’s what I decided to do, the engine out job was hard enough, but I have to say, this engine strip (and rebuild!) is a little daunting ... but should be fun!! at least! (I am not looking forward to turning that key for the first time tho!!)

Turbos? Well, I am looking into a Garrett kit, decided that it was time to move away from KKK and give Garrett’s a go … but more of that to come soon …

Anyway, some pics?

Hey Viperbl, I'm curious to know how long it takes to get the engine out and put it back - start to finish?

That's bad news about the old turbos. But I sense you are taking this as an oppertunity not a crisis!

Richard once again respect not just for doing the work and coming back bigger and better yet again, but for doing it yourself :notworthy:

Best of luck with the project, keep us posted.

Ready and tested in time for R246 Live? Are we going to see your name on the list?

Well, wait and see, quite long I would suspect, but I will try and put some hours together (keep reminding me! lol!) but, I will take my time putting it back together, a LOT to think about and understand ...

Cheers Graham, and yes, definatly an oppertunity!

I am going to try my best for live, I also want to get it back running in time for the hillclimb out here!! (18th of April!) I recon I have a good chance of getting better than 3rd (dont want to tempt fate and say anything else!) but, all looks like the old wossner pistons could stop this right now!!! but one thing I dont want to do is sacrifice the project to get it done in time for any event ...

Regular cycle is recommended, provided you stay below 1800 rpm, the K03s won't kick in. Use the power wash after that.

I am not sure what I will end up with to be honest, I am hoping for the right side of 700 chp, but I also want to change the cams, but not sure funds will permit that at this stage, so might be limited with that...

I have secured a GT2871R kit, I think its the right size of turbo, I hope its not too laggy, but again, proper cams should help combat this if it does end up being ...
