I think the B6 S4 would be an easier and less stressful car to own in the long run. No timing belt, no boost leaks, no bendy wheels. You also get a newer, lower mileage car for your money.
Servicing for an S4 must be more straightforwrd - specialists are non-existent in North Yorkshire.
The RS4 is faster, rarer, rides better and, in most people's eyes, looks better.
Rear leg room is the same for both.
Build quality, in my opinion, was better on the B5's. Attention to detail is definitely better. B6's score on things such as fully electric seats with more lumbar adjustment, auto lights/wipers, lights that stay on 'til you're in the house and girly stuff like that.
The £20k S4 will stiil be shedding value at a fair rate whereas the RS4 has (please be true) almost stopped depreciating.
Hope this helps...

80K MILES.... high mileage! pity there isnt a laughing icon on here!!

My UrS4 has 208000 miles on it (5 pot 20v'er) and still as smooth as the day it left the factory!!

the RS4 (B5) is a 2000 year model with 107k miles on it and this 2 is soooo silky smooth its a gem of an engine:):)

please dont be put off by these mileages if it has a good service history with it.

The WR quattro now being 21 years old on Jan 2nd STILL runs just about perfectly as one could expect with 135k miles on board.

The higher the mileage can sometimes mean its been serviced better and looked after better than a very low mileage example, it can go both ways.

If your kids are 4 years old.... they can be easily wedged in the back while you have fun up front.... you NEED to educate them at a young age to apppreciate cars of this performance and quality.

you wont go far wrong with either I suspect.

Thanks for all the responses guys, you really helping convince me the RS4 is the way to go. I totally understand what SimonC is saying about specialists in north yorkshire. I thought it was just me not knowing where to look. I would say though that ive always had really good service at York audi, albeit expensive.

My wife keeps pushing me to look at newer car, but it looks like the pull of the RS is gonna prove to strong!

My eldest who is 4, already understands to appreciate my car, im a nightmare, no food, no muddy feet etc! she hates it, bless her. she much prefers our old fiat brava run about, its a complete tip, it might me just me but do wives ever clean there cars!

Good write up mate, and sackers, I'm the same... with the missus - and she hates it too!
Her Citreon is a sh*t tip - hate being in it, and never drive it unless absolutely necessary :)

Mate... you know you want the RS; if you don't do it now, you never will - plus, think about it... you'll buy the S4 and always kick yourself... "should have bought the RS..."

Sackers if you fancy a run to Hull i will gladly demonstrate a tuned rs4,give you a good run down of what to look for etc etc i can show you almost std performance and stg3 as mines revo remapped and adjustable,i think it will make your mind up,ive had mine 3 years and seen nothing that i can replace it with,Il get my flameproof jacket on before i dare say that a b6 s4 is bland and nothing special, yes you will get a newer car but similar economy to an rs4 without the performance, financially an rs4 will hold its money better just make sure you buy a good one a bargain example rarely is in the long run if you know what i mean, contact me via pm if i can help at all

Thats for sale to pay for the body repairs on the WR

the UrS4 is much bigger inside than the RS4 B5....... oh and its chipped by Rothelle. Saloon auto so your good lady may like it.

my girlfriend has had the S3 before the RS... GREAT CARS :beerchug:

LOL wondered how long it would take for the fastest colour comments to start rolling in! The one ive seen locally was Misano. Not sure which colour I prefer tbh

And thanks for the offer QuattroKid1, Ill have to gratefully decline though :)
