Thinking about getting an S4...

Post by goodridge » Fri Feb 08, 2008 9:09 am

Hi guys, been browsing the forum with interest for a while now and seriously considering getting an S4. I have a couple of questions though I can't easily find the answers to. Where can I find the weight and dimensions for the B5 S4? And also, knowing what you do now about the cars, what would be on your priority list of first essential mods/preventative maintenance on intial purchase of the car? Is there anyway to minimise the possibilty of the dreaded turbo failure? Obviously, other than regular servicing etc. I'm thinking maybe replacing vacuum and boost hoses etc? Any info appreciated
Thanks

John

Read all of the 'stickys' at the top of the S4 section. That should provide you with 99% of what you want to know

How do mate, welcome to the forum

Dimensions and weight i cant help with off the top of my head, but i#m sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly to assist...

First things to do would be health check, from MRC if you can get to them - They'll be able to let you know exactly what you need.

but things like replacing the 710A Diverter's with updated 710N's is a good place to start, they're a common failure point. Check and replace if necessary the TBB (Throttle Body Boot) if you can spare the 250ish notes then get an APR Bipipe instead of the TBB, much better and invincible compared to the stock item. Check, double check and triple check the rest of the boost hoses as a leak will certainly not help your turbo's... Boost leak tester's can be bought or built quite cheaply. Then there's the 'After Run Pump Mod' Involves replacing a temp sensor, loads of info on this on the forum, a quick search should fine everything you need but this can help prolong the life of your turbo's.

Just a few things to get you going, bound to be plenty more that i've forgotten!
FOR SALE  :

Weight varies. It's on the vehicle sticker. Mines 1615 for example, option dependent.

Hallo mate, another deserter from Dubforce lol! :D

Sold my Rallye which you probably know (Gibby has it now) and bought an S4 Avant about 18 months ago.

As cars go they can be fekkin expensive to run/maintain but as of this moment if you offered me my Rallye back which I loved for nearly 8 years I would rather keep my S4.

The Rallye was a great car but very basic and when she is up for it the S4 is a real wolf in sheep's clothing.

My advice is buy one, before parting with the spons though take someone who knows with you and Vag-Com it as well as generally checking it out.

Once purchased take it down to the Venerable Doug at MRC Tuning who is the great lord of Audi tuning and repair and have him pass his magic over it.

If it is decreed sound you might as well have a re-map while you are there and go home with a massive smile!

Hi Yorkie.

I've not deserted it just yet! lol I've still got my Ed1 in the garage. Will be putting the charger back on soon! I love the Golf to bits but I've had it over 3 and a half years now and I'm just wondering if it's time for a change. What spec is yours up to then ? Got any pics? I've got an idea of how I want one to look in my head. Have you encountered any of the costly repairs yet? I did call my dealer this morning to get a price on turbo's and they said £531 for KO3's (each) and 1k for KO4's (each) So really if you replace like for like it's not a lot dearer than I've just paid because my charger went bang! I'm in the trade myself so labour is free and I'm friendly with my dealer because I used to work there! So I'm hoping it's a viable option.

Charger on my Rallye was about a Grand too but a damn sight easier to replace than S4 turbos.

I reckon if you get to drive an S4 your Ed1 will be for sale :D

I've had a replacement caliper and just about every sensor on the engine due to a problem which Doug at MRC spotted in no time, just waiting for the next big expense now!
