2 cars on one policy
2 cars on one policy
Hi,
phoned my ins about getting insurance for a second car to use for work but that want £1000 to insure it. Its only a 1.1 saxo!!!
Whats the best way to have two cars on one policy for reasonable price because my arguement is that you can only be driving one car at a time esp when your the only driver insured to drive either.
will have 4 years NCB when up for renewal and 6points for speeding.
any ideas.

Jon might be your man for this.
However, here are my experiences
First, tell them that the saxo will be the main car, but be prepared to state what sort of mileage you will do in each to justify this.
Second, try putting your wife/girlfriend on the policy, as surprisingly this can reduce the premiums.
Third, see if you can find anyone that sells a 'Prestige Portfolio' policy, which is underwritten by bank of scotland. I have one of these and it is a multi-vehicle policy and is combined with our house buildings/contents and travel insurance. The car part of it covers as many cars as you like, and all for class 1 business use too (just a shame they don't cover motorbikes).
I took mine out with a place called Robinson-Scott in Ireland. They have now been taken over though.
The limit is on the value of each individual car (mine is set at 40k per car). They also do not worry about mods as long as you disclose them.
Last year the total premium for the whole lot was less than it previously cost to insure 2 of our cars individually, but on renewal they changed the premium calculator and it went up a bit. It is still cheaper than individual policies though.
I forget who the new brokers are now, but I'll try to dig the info out tonight if you are interested.
When I added the RS4 to the policy it went up by around 200 quid, and when I previously asked for a quote for a Porsche Cayenne S valued at 55k it would have gone up by 500 (and only another 500 if I wanted a 70k Cayenne turbo too !!! ).
btw they don't do track insurance, if this is a deciding factor.
Cheers,
John.

Re: 2 cars on one policy
Hi Greg
Be interested to hear any further feedback you get on the best options. We're considering buying another car to run alongside the RS2 and the S3 - to reduce the mileage we're clocking up on both.
Hi Jon
Looks like we need an RS246 guide to insuring mini fleets!

Hi Jon
No good for us we're both employed and business use is the standard run to and fro one place work and the odd business trip elsewhere.

Re: 2 cars on one policy
Hi Greg
We've got the RS2 and S3 insured with Frizzells (through the CSMA). Rang for a quote on a couple of cars we were looking at and by adding the car to one of the existing policies (and covering us both for Social, Domestic and Pleasure + business use) the additional premium was between £350 and £400. That included an introductory discount given we already insured two cars with them. We're both over 25, with maximum NCD and clean licences.
As it turns out, we've decided to go with a car that comes with a year's free insurance. So we can leave worrying about additional insurance costs until next year.

Re: 2 cars on one policy
I've just had this problem myself, unlucky for me as I needed to insure two group 20 cars. I am with Norwich Union Direct, age 28, have full ncb and a clean licence. They would not put 2 cars on one policy, but did give me a complimentry 4 yrs ncb on a second policy with them as my driving history is reasonably good (a couple of sp30's and a ts 20 over the last 6 years (thats good!)). I insure both cars for approx £1900 per year fully comp, reducing the amount of miles each car does per year by having access to the two also reduced the policy prices on each. It might also be worth checking to see if it would be cheaper to insure both cars as above but in your spouses name ( if he/ she has a better diving history) and become a named driver on the policies. Post codes also have a lot to do with quotes as well, check to see if your parents address is in a lower bracket area and change all vechile details over to their address. Worth a try.
Too much is bad.
Plenty is better.
