Quality.

Virgin cable for me. Bit pi$$ed off with it, they promised 20mb when I signed up, I said yeah, right, you mean up to 20, and she said no, definitely 20. I rarely get above 17.

Eh?!! Bloody hell Mike how on earth do you manage with only 17Mbps??

You can't trust these call centre types; they rarely understand what they are saying/selling. I think there's only one ISP that has agreed to take out the "up to X" clause of their advertised service and disclose an honest figure for the b/w you'll actually get. All the rest stick rigidly to the "up to X" mantra - for very large ISPs with huge access networks it's difficult to do anything else.

I found that when I ordered Be they did a line test and told me I could expect about 12 - 13 meg which is roughly what the modem says it's logged in as. It was also the same when I had bulldog a while back, I actually got the 8 meg that I expected to get.

I couldn't fault either the only reason I changed was that be was cheaper and offered a faster service & bulldog couldn't provide an upgrade even though they offered a 16 meg service.

It's still only your 'access rate' though Chip - NO ISP can guarantee you that rate e2e to a web or FTP server anywhere in the world....

I work as a tech for a broadband company - name no names.

But it is so annoying when people do speed tests by downloading a test file and they are disappointed when they can download 326mb file in 2-3 mins.

20mb connection - will not take to much to guess the isp. I hate my job!!

Stiger, I work for a well known broadband company as well who happen to own several different brand's naming no names and know what the backbone network is like and have stayed with other companines for that very reason.

S4TAN, I know the router shows the access rate but I regularly pulled marginally below (7.5 meg on an 8 meg service) whilst on bulldog & some where around 9 meg on Be

any way enough of this tech bull sh!t back to talking cars & beer

Web-caching obviously helps if the ISP caches web content close to the access modules/data PoPs (i.e less hops to the cache, no core/backbone contention or data centre bottlenecks) - but your e2e session is only as fast as your slowest link/hop (b/w constrained, over-subscribed, QoS-enabled interfaces, packet-drop mechanisms on egress queues etc) ... blah blah ... ok, back to cars & booze.
