However, this doesn't necessary mean that a car is not insured, because not every insurance company registers with the database system. Still a handy piece of kit if the police try to pull a fast one on you and your insurance company has registered.

There is a big flaw in all this - the car may show up as insured but is the driver sitting behind the wheel permitted to drive the vehicle? If the driver is not a named driver on the policy there is every possibility that the vehicle is being driven un-insured.

Actually every motor insurer has to upload to MID in order to be compliant with the MIB (Motor Insurers Bureau) which allows them to trade motor insurance. I've been working on MID for over 5 years now on behalf of an insurance firm. Still, it's far from flawless, although a definite step in the right direction.

Well I got pulled for not having insurance and was threatened to having the car taken away. I apparantly wasnt on their database which they shoed me in their van.

I protested the fact that I did have insurance and was given a producer.

Phone insurance company and they said they should be part of the databse and noone else has called stating this problem. The fact is they were a broker and obtained insurance from another company. Lloyds of London I believe.

Can I do anything to get on this database Who should be the people Im contacting to get this done if my insurers say they cant do anythign about this.

Saf, you should contact Lloyds directly. That doesn't sound right at all.

Alternatively, you could call the MIB and ask them if/why Lloyds aren't submitting their data. With the growing number of ANPR cameras on the road, you'll probably end up getting pulled again. It also means that you won't be able to tax your car online if your details aren't on MID.

One option is to carry a copy of your cover statement. The police should be happy enough to speak to your insurer who will be able to confirm that you are covered. They should be able to do this at the roadside so you don't need to faff about with a producer.
It's what we have advised some of our customers as a temporary measure when we've had issues, ie: data being rejected from MID due to data corruption, etc.

Cars been parked up for a while due to the upgrade and will be back on road in a few months. But I shall get onto it and have this sorted ASAP. Thanks for the advice.

Word of advice. If you are issued with a producer or any other of police document on the roadside, don't sign it. The producer is a contract. You wouldn't sign a contract you didn't agree now would you? By the way signing a producer or any other police document is voluntary!
