Hello! New member's first post. Recently bought a s4 b6 avant - very happy with it.
In view of the current petrol prices, do any of you guys run yours on normal unleaded as opposed to super unleaded? Any views or feedback would be appreciated.

Yes. I do a hell of a lot of miles so have always stuck to 95 RON with no ill effects. I've also had plenty of run-ins with other cars, and mine's performed as the figures on paper suggest against them.
I've read plenty of times about the supposed increased frugality using 98 and above, but I've also never seen a definitive test to back this up. Maybe someone on here has and could link to it?
Considering the book average mpg is 21.2, & mine's on 23.3 (20% urban, 50% m/way crusing, 30% outright hooliganism), and that book figure was probably generated using the recommended 98 RON, I've never felt the need to pay for the higher grade.

A thread taken from tyresmoke.net. The 4.2 V8, non FSI. One bank is supplied with 95. The other with 98. Higher octane fule provide more than perofrmance. They have cleaning agents that 95 do not contain.

I didn't think it was saying 98 has agents that 95 doesn't.
I thought it was saying that "our 98 has cleaning agents and this is the difference against the crapiest 95 we could find".
As if a petroleoum company would try to make the comparison as extreme as possible!

I ran a 1994 Subaru Justy on Optimax/V-Power for 2 years because the cost per mile was lower, thus making the detergents an added bonus. I did the same a few years ago with a 1992 Range Rover for the same reason. I tend to monitor fuel consumption quite closely as it is often the first warning of a component failure. The VAG trip computers are not 100% accurate for the actual MPG figure (though you can re-set them to eliminate this) but you ought to see a slight improvement on full-strength unleaded and similarly a slight deterioration if something starts to fail, usually well before any fault codes are stored.
