Doubts in buying RS6

Hello all , congrats for such nice forum

I am in the process of buying a 2004 RS6 here in Portugal , but i have another competitor which is a 2005 BMW M3 CS package with lots of CSL goodies.

My main question between these two "monster" is that for now i have a great trust in M3 engines and anciliaries, since i also have a 98 E36 M3 and problems that occur are "easy" to get around.

I already know i can easily solve the DRC issue or other little bugs, since every car has bugs.

What can you advise? Not intend to track the car, once i already have one specific for that

TBH the rs6 a better car than a m3 , It all depends on what you want from the car . As for the engine I've never heard of a rs6 engine letting go . Good luck with whitch ever you go with . grizz

i also think the RS6 will be far superior than an M3..road test then back to back then decide..or just buy both...

Depends on what you will use it for. My brothers M3 is more involving to drive but not as quick, much less practical and tiring on long journeys. That's the practicalities. In terms of perception, the RS6 has more substance, whereas the M3 is more common (ie frequently seen)- all IMHO.

Yes, i know the RS6 is more of a "car" than the "common" M3.

For that, its easy. Put a RS6 side by side to a M3 and compare heehhe , RS6 wins by far lenght.

However, i am just worried because since i am not into audis hows the reliability , and the choice of going to the RS6, since i already read here stories about people selling their RS6 due to problems. Correct me if i am wrong please..

Build quality is head and shoulders over BMW - design quality too, apart from known weak issues - DRC, and, if you put too much torque through it (by tuning, not normal use), the gearbox.
Mine's for sale but only 'cos I have 9 points on my license and just cannot resist temptation.
Otherwise, I would keep it, no question.

Crikey.... I was reading this out of a semi interest in an RS6.

If the RS6 build quality is better than a BMW, then either the RS6 is much better built than most other Audi's or the BMW's are worse than I thought.... Not seen anything to rival my old 230E Merc's build quality....design and dynamics erm well! Thats another thing altogether!

They are built on a separate production line, all manned by people called Hans. The Germans were always good with their Hans!
Drive one and see what I mean. Audi's have been better built than BMW's and Merc's for some time now - IMHO.

Having looked quite closely at the RS6 and an e39 BMW while changing bits of the navigation system in both I'd say the Audi is slightly ahead in build quality.

I test drove an M3 and to be honest it was deeply disappointing - in fact I drove several and some were better than others by a surprising margin. The manual gearbox shift quality is more befitting a Transit than a prestige sports coupe. What was fantastic was the CSL which is quite amazingly different from the standard car or even CS even in things like the way the SMG behaves. The CSL was awesome - one of only 2 cars I've ever deliberately had sideways on the test drive. You wouldn't want to drive one every day though.

I'm selling my RS6 very reluctantly to free up some of the cash tied up in it as I can't justify not doing so given we're about to buy a relatively expensive house, otherwise I'd keep it.

Well, i am really appreciated for your help guys

You are really making me decide on the RS6 over the M3.

ANd other + point to the RS6 is that you see here in Portugal 1 in 6 months Its a very rare car, especially the sedan version.


BTW the car (RS6) i am seeing has not a rear spoiler , its full extras, but i saw in some photos that most every RS6 has it. Did the owner possibly removed it?

Mine was rubbish sorry lads but it was The most unreliable car I have ever owned. The main reason I pushed so hard for Audi to take it back was the dealers are rubbish over here and seem to have no idea how to fix problems which mine had loads. The finnish on the car was as good as it gets but major eletrical problems and on going DRC problems ment it had to go back plus all my mates were take the piss because every week I had a new hire car.

9 weeks to fix a fault is rubbish IMO.

Here's the list of problems I had in four months of ownership.

3 Recovery's
DRC system failed and needed to be replaced
Engine managment problems
Tyre pressure system failed
CD player failed
Front parking sensors failed
Rear wash wipe failed

Bit rubbish really Audi not up to the hype IMO

Sounds like you had a bad experience. DRC we all know about but the elctrical stuff is new. Mine has been bullet proof in all but the DRC and thats now being sorted. You may have got a lemon - or you may work for BMW's Marketing Department. Probably the former. You've got some interesting cars though so you would be no stranger to break-downs, especially in the electronics department.

IMO - Audi - "World Beaters from the Sausage Eaters!" Has a ring to it. Maybe they can replace Vorsprung der Technic with this.
