Ive been posting this questions on a couple of Audiforums now.
Ive recently bought an S4 Avant Tiptronic with only 32000km on it. The car is great but I need to know about a certain annoyance in my transmission, if its completely normal or not.
When driving at slow speeds and/or low rpm, it sometimes stutters/jerks, as if it was about to “engage a gear” and then cancelled. Here are some examples of scenarios.
- When driving in my garage, and accelerating to 10-20, and then completely step of the throttle, after a half a second the car/transmission stutters, as if it quickly almost threw in 2nd gear and then disengaged it again.
- When driving at about 70 km/h, manually changing gears from 5th to 6th makes the same stutter, but not when I change gears from 4th to 5th. Here its just a smooth transition.
- When driving in 40 km/h in a slight downhill, no load on the engine, though I might have had the foot on the pedal, probably in 3rd gear, suddenly it might make one jerk/stutter.
The feeling is like when youre on a motorbike with the engine on and putting in first gear, although in my car I would recon its more dull.
Ive had transmission oil change due to radiator replacement (badger), but ive experienced the same behaviour before as after the oilchange.
Can anyone with an S4 Tiptronic confirm this behaviour?
Tiptronic gearbox stuttering behaviour
RE: Tiptronic gearbox stuttering behaviour
I must say that I have not noticed this but I will test it today and let you know how I get on. I think I am right in saying there is a throttle update but not sure how you would know if you have that?? I have had mine looked at as I felt the throttle was not as responsive as the car I tested but I only have 3k miles so far.
RE: Tiptronic gearbox stuttering behaviour
Ive done some testing today and also had a service-rep from our Audi dealer in Gothenburg for a spin. I get the same transmission-feeling when driving in 25 km/h and changing between 2nd and 3rd gear, almost every time. Also, same thing when going in 90 and changing from 5th to 6th.
The service-rep said, and I said that i can very well beleive this is normal since im fiddeling manually with the gears in the same time, but I cant understand why I every now and then get the same stutter when i accelerate from 0-10 and lift of the trottle and then after 0.5 seconds the transmission stutters, or as i wrote above, when driving downhill with no engineload without changing gears, it makes one sudden jerk with no gearchange.
We agreed ile drive for a month and we'll se if it gets worse or not. Other than that, i really like the transmission, and wouldnt trade it for the world for a manual.

RE: Tiptronic gearbox stuttering behaviour
Ok I have done some testing but could not duplicate this at all, I also asked a friend to try in my car (S4 B7 Tip 2007). My friend could not get the car do any of the "stuttering" so to me it would suggest a possible fault? Have you had a VAG-COM on the car to see if any fault codes are shown or if it is set-up correctly? The reason I ask is the dealer I use who seem good are not as good as I thought as they don't even know how to add a courtesy drip wipe after cleaning the windscreen. So I think a lot of dealers try to help but just don’t have the knowledge to do so.
There must be a Tech on here that has an idea??
Let me know if I can help anymore?

RE: Tiptronic gearbox stuttering behaviour
Thx. I will try to look up an other S4 Tiptronic at a dealer and try it out. I have 1.5 months waranty left so if anything is going to be done it needs to be done within that time.
