Real Lucky Escape........

Post by john_s » Thu Aug 14, 2003 3:06 pm

Much to my shame, the first time I get caught speeding in years isn't in my Ur 20V but a bloody transit van!! 93.5mph in a 60 zone near Forfar which is North of Edinburgh and the judge has a reputation for being very hard on speeders. Soo, case comes up this morning at the Sheriff Court and I've been cacking myself. However, 4pts and £250 later I'm feeling a lot better about the situation.

Aye! 'cept it was the first time I'd hired a 'tranny' in years. Normally spot the cops pulling out after me, but the windows on this were blanked out at the back and so I was easy meat.

I didn't realise that a vehicle of that weight was restricted to 60mph on a dual carriageway, whereas it's 70mph on a motorway.... Not that there's too many motorways North of the border!

I hope I get off as lightly. Or just get off.

I have just been booked for speeding in Germany when slowing from huge speed (in an unrestricted section) into a some road works where the limit was 80 kmh. In Germany if you're more than 40 (kmh) over the limit on the autobahn its an instant ban (30 kmh in built up areas). Anyway, the camera had me at 121 kmh i.e. 41 over the limit - however, the german courts automatically give you 10% so 37 over the limit which means three points and a 75 euro fine. Incidently, in Germany the rule is 18 points before you accumulate to a ban. Another interesting point is that in Germany for anything under 20 kmh over the speed limit you are unlikely to get any points just a small (25 euro) fine. So for my four speeding offences in the last two years I have a total of 3 points - I think I can live with 0.75 of a point average

The judge hasnt got a clue has he? What makes it worse is that at 93.5mph in the van, you were actively really trying to be naughty. In the Ur, you could have pleaded ignorance

I was trying to get the van back to Aberdeen before I was hit for late arrival charges....£200 down on that deal then! The police at Forfar are well set up: They hide just prior to a fantastic downhill stretch where you could max anything out, before climbing back up the other side. Great visibility there...unless your back windows are blanked out like the tranny.

O dear John,

I travel that road a lot. Do you know exactly where they were hiding? It's always good to know their favoured spots.

Golich,

Usually by the agricultural supplier and on the left as your heading North from Dundee. Can't miss it, just before that huge sweeping downhill - where luck would have it...... Damn!

I'll keep that in mind for tomorrow morning. I'm going down to Glasgow airport to take reciept of my new Cannondale Gemini 900 full suspension mountain bike.

I saved £700 on the UK price buying direct from Canada and paying the shop assistant a return flight ticket from Toronto to deliver!

She's not a bad looking lass either she's going to stay a day or two to check out out trails....the girlfriend has been pretty cool about it all!!!
