These comparisons are amusing, because most of the time none of us are going to be doing such things on the roads against an M3 and the only opportunity is on a track and I for one don't intend taking my RS on track because I couldn't afford the potential repairs if it were damaged in any way, shape of form!
Bear in mind the US spec RS4 in that video packs an extra 150kgs over the Euro spec RS4 - not sure what the weight is on the US spec M3 but I seem to remember it is the same as Euro spec M3...
If that is the case, a Euro spec RS4 should be very evenly matched even at high speeds, as has been the case in a number of tests (in fact some have the RS4 quicker)...

Good point! However, what contibutes to that considerable extra weight?mixja wrote:Bear in mind the US spec RS4 in that video packs an extra 150kgs over the Euro spec RS4 - not sure what the weight is on the US spec M3 but I seem to remember it is the same as Euro spec M3...

Quite right mixja. The autocar test of M3 vs RS4 showed the 0-150 mph times to be almost identical between M3 and RS4 saloon (M3 being 0.3s quicker to 150 mph). Hardly a big difference and less impressive for the M3 given its lighter weight/better power to weight ratio.mixja wrote:Bear in mind the US spec RS4 in that video packs an extra 150kgs over the Euro spec RS4 - not sure what the weight is on the US spec M3 but I seem to remember it is the same as Euro spec M3...

i believe that's the euro spec RS4 in the video i posted as the runs were done in europe. also the M3 was spinning the tires as noted in the video beacuse the driver didn't do a pre-run burnout. it might have caught up to the rs4 sooner if it didn't spin...then again the rs4 doesn't have to worry about traction, eh?mixja wrote:Bear in mind the US spec RS4 in that video packs an extra 150kgs over the Euro spec RS4 - not sure what the weight is on the US spec M3 but I seem to remember it is the same as Euro spec M3...

that was only for the run from a stop. just like at a drag strip you heat the tires up a bit before doing your run. strangely enough, i have actually seen people do a small burnout at a stop light before racing, but nothing really beats awd from a stop.mrdeli wrote:If the M3 has to do a pre run 'burnout', it makes the time pretty irrelevant me thinks. Imagine - Off from the lights, excuse me sir, please hang on for a minute or two while i do my 'burnout' - hehehehe Quattro rules, esp in the cold wet UK :@)
