Aluminium mirrors
I have found some Aluminium Mirrors for my S4.
Before i purchase them, has anyone tried to change the mirrors before. My car is the pre-facelift model and the mirrors that i have found are post-facelift. Will the internals fit and how easy is it to remove the old mirror, transfer the internals and fit back to the car.

Re: Aluminium mirrors
Buy yourself the Haynes manual. I know they only cover the non quattro A4s but it's much the same procedure for all the A4s. I was looking at that section on Saturday.

Re: Aluminium mirrors
Thanks for that, i never think of the Haynes Manual because it doesn't cover the S4.
I will have to get down to Halfords, is there any chance you could scan the page in the mean time.
Do you have any thoughts on whether pre-facelift internals will fit post-facelift housings
Thanks

Re: Aluminium mirrors
Where did you 'find' the alu mirrors ? Are they from the German Ebay ? I am interested as I have seen they are a *lot* cheaper there, but I don't think they are genuine so I was wondering what the quality is like.

Re: Aluminium mirrors
They are from my local scrapyard. They dont usually have anything worthwhile so i was surprised to find them.

Re: Aluminium mirrors
If you check out the UK Ebay there is a set there too. The guy says they are genuine from an Audi S3 - look like pre-facelift shape shells to me. Currently at £51
Re: Aluminium mirrors
Blimey - now £140 with 5 days still to go:

Much cheaper from Germany...

Re: Aluminium mirrors
I guess that there'd be quite a demand for these - if anyone gets their's scratched the only solution is replacement isn't it?
£51 sems like a bargain - but how much are they new?

Re: Aluminium mirrors
What happened with the ones at your local scrappy ? Were they the wrong side of the facelift ? And if so, how did you find out that they wouldn't fit ?

Na you'd have to dent them. As these have the brushed effect. This is created by simply taking a piece of P400-P600 grade wet n dry and rubbing in exactly the same direction as the brushed effect.
However, I'd be surprised if they are not coated with a clear coat lacquer to stop oxidisation, as aluminium oxides instantly. Therefore, you would only resort to this if a stone chip was deep enough to get down to the aluminium and was left for some time to oxidise to the white fur stage in which case you could quite easily whip the mirror off, re-create the brushed effect as above, key the remaining lacquer with the same wet n dry thus ensuring that you had removed the many applications of silicon etc. Buy a tin of clear coat aerosol from Halifords and re-lacqure. Hey presto nice shiny new looking EXPENSIVE allu Audi mirrors for those of you with mirrors looking a little dog eared.

Re: Aluminium mirrors
Simon,
Check out the German ebay site. The place is littered with alu mirrors for Audis. Just search for Audi S4
Typical price seems to be around 100 euro, and shipping should be no more than about 20 euro, which makes about £80. I have bought stuff from there before and never had any problems - just mail the seller before bidding to ensure they will ship to the UK.
