Petrol - enlightening news about BP and Tesco

Was chatting to a mate of mine who has recently started driving tankers for BP. He revealed some interesting facts about certain fuels:

BP. Both BP unleaded fuels come out of the same storage tanks using the same hoses and are delivered using the same tankers.

BP also now supply the same fuel to Sainsbury's petrol stations.

Tescos. The reason why it's cheap is because it is cheap. The silicone and general rubbish build up on the inside of the hoses and fittings that fill the tankers is massive. This goes for all their fuels including the greenenergy 99.
Even the Tesco tankers have BP fuel cards to run on BP fuel becuase they now how rubbish their own fuel is and they want the trucks to last!!

The only fuels that come out of separate tanks, with separate hoses and separate trucks (or compartments of trucks) is Shell V-Power and V-Diesel.

As with many other things it seems you get what you pay for (accepting regional fuel pricing) with fuel.

I think John means that BP Ultimate and BP95 are different fuels but they dont bother using seperate tankers so if one day a tanker had BP95 in and the next it would have ultimate in, there could be a mix of fuel etc..

so if a tanker that fills up a 99ron tank then fills up a 95ron tank does it change to 97ron cos of the 99ron that was left behind and mixing with it...
lots of theorys but no real proof..im happy using my tesco 99ron..and on the rolling rd day next month your,ll see just how happy cos i,ll be showing good power with my tank full of it..just like i am...

Apologies for the slow response guys - I've been off the forum a bit while being drpressed about my car being nicked.

The recent Shell vs BP thread reminded me of this one.

It is kind of amazing but to make it totally clear BP's unleaded fuel's (both the 97 and 95 RON) come out of the same storage tanks, using the same hoses and get delivered using the same tankers.

Now, that isn't to say that the 95RON labelled fuel isn't 95RON because over time fuel degrades. It may be that all the fuel is 97+RON but it is delivered to the 95RON pumps at a later date. This bit I am however just speculating.

The fuel companies are not allowed to advertise a particular RON unless it is or exceeds that RON, so there is nothing wrong with having 97RON fuel in a 95RON pump.

Tesco 99RON fuel is 99RON or possibly more as discussed above. In fact the fuel may be 100 RON when it is delivered to the tanks to ensure it is not below 99RON when the last bit is sold. You may remember the press stories about large amounts of silicone causing damage to some peoples engines after having filled up with Tesco fuel last year. This was an overdose to the mixture of silicone(I am assuming this is a lubricting agent). Supposedly the Tesco (greenenergy) fuels do contain a high level of silicone which sticks to the inside of the fuel system. As mentioned in my first post the Tesco tanker lorries don't run on Tesco fuel but BP because they have seen the affects of the high silicone fuel.

My tanker driver mates advice if you want high RON fuel - buy Shell.

Rupert is quite right about different lorries filling up other companies tanks.

BP currently has a diesel shortage and after supplying Heathrow they have a lower stock than usual to supply the garages, so they buy in the fuel from the other suppliers.

If a supplier is short one month for example they will buy in fuel from another supplier, perferably using their own or unbranded tankers but I assume that doesn't always satisfy the potential demand so on rare occassions the alternative suppliers lorries are used.

Facts on Fuel and oil are deliberately made vague by the large companies because they think we are all thick. We believe what they tell us..... To be honest, unless you do the research or it is done by an independant then what can you believe.....

Basically, none of us really has a fuppin clue what we are putting into our tanks. All we can do is
go by the BS kite marks. As someone said, you need to get an independent lab to do the analysis
for you. Even then, there is a large amount of variation. Mixtures change seasonally.
