How to test the engine oil
How to test the engine oil
I have heard of this being done before, maybe an idea to check for engine problems, ie they can determine different metals in the oil, like turbo etc (if any!)
Has anyone done this before? Who is best company to send to???

RE: How to test the engine oil
Ok, got my report back from these guys, and I must say, I am VERY impressed for 25 quid!
He gave me a PDF with all the data, what traces of what metals where found etc, and the best part? an MP3 with him taking me through every part of the document, explaining what each metal is etc, if it’s safe level, any concerns he has etc!!
Two main things, one, no turbo wear at all!! PHEW!, second, he thinks the 10w60 oil is too heavy for this use, he recommended using FUCHS GT 5w40 (formally known as plantomot), so, I might give this a go and send him another sample.

RE: How to test the engine oil
I send oil samples away for testing on a regular basis from our machines at work. I've had it done through a few third parties such as Allison Hydraulics and Kanflu, i'll make some enquiries and see if the people they use also do engine oils.
incidentally for all those who watch Robot Wars, the owner of Kanflu is also the owner and builder of Canopener

RE: How to test the engine oil
done a bit of digging and found a firm who can do this in a fashion. they can't give as detailed an account as the one posted above but they can tell you what condition the oil is in and what metals are present. if there's enough interest i'll persue it further and try to get a decent price for a quantity survey.

5w40 is the best for our cars even with remaps. Yep !!viperbl wrote:Ok, got my report back from these guys, and I must say, I am VERY impressed for 25 quid!

Fuel dilution was 1.46%, which he says is too high...
What did yours come back as??
I am on Castrol Edge Sport 10w60.
Did he recommend Fuchs GT 5w40 for you? I have not been able to find it over here ...
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: How to test the engine oil
So that's oilman and your oil analyser against 10W60.
I'm using 5W40 and think I'll stick with it.

He really wants me to use this 5w40 oil, which I am trying to source ... then try that for a few 1000 miles and test again. I am also changing my air filter (well, getting a new one) like he suggested.

you can get it from German and Swedish, it's branded as something Titan Supersyn 5w40 but when you read the container it says Fuchs on it. it's replaced Synter Gold as their preffered oil.
