Sold S4 car was CLOCKED now being re-sold

Post by doeboy » Tue Sep 18, 2007 10:53 pm

Need some advice on this one. Basically to cut a long story short my s4 had been clocked in 2004 from 192k to god knows what, it shows 130k probably around 230k. Anyhow I did a check but it didn't show the mileage discrepancy so I went ahead with it. Within a week of owning it, the gearbox went bang and it needed a replacement, new clutch and flywheel at a cost of £1700, (I paid 5k for the car). So I decided to sell for various reasons. 2 months went by with little interest. Last week I was called by this cocky Asian lad, anyhow the short of was he’d found it was clocked, said he’d only found out that evening on the way down when he’s read the report. He offered me £4100, I was naturally devastated that my check hadn’t shown the mileage discrepancy. I thought he might have doctored the report too. So I said no and went home where I ran my own experian check to find he was right! The next day I called him again and he bought it for £3.550 a loss of over 3k in 3 months!

Anyhow he’s now relisted it despite answering me 5 times that he wasn’t trade. He’s not declared the mileage and quite frankly I want to shop him. What should I do?

I need to add he’s abit of a loon along with his mates/family, he obviously has my address and I’m concerned slightly of repercussions.

My wife reckons that is broom manor in Swindon. Anyone else on here that can confirm..? Trading standards, the Police and write to the DVLA with the correct mileage...

Failing that, get your mates to call up and string him along long enough for the DVLA to catch up with him...?

Five years worth of MoT's and a service history it says. So how much of this has been falsified I wonder?

You said that your original checks did not show up any evidence of clocking - what checks did you carry out? If you did a check via HPI they offer an indemnity against this sort of thing, so you may be able to claim.

When you sent the VRD off to DVLA did you put a mileage on it yourself?

As mentioend above, you ought to report the advert/car to Trading Standards so that someone else doesn't become the next victim.

One sec you sold the car back to him for £3,550 after spending £1,700 on it!!!

I would have kept it or asked for all my money back, sounds like he does this all the time. I would report him to the local trading standards and report it to the Police as it sound like you was coned.

I bought the car on Ebay for 5K it wasn't a good car, suppose i got burned, when my previous ebay a4 2.8 was excellent. I tried to sell her only to find that when this lad came to view he had evidence it had been clocked. I then sold it for 3.5k to him on the basis it was a "dirty" car, unknown milage but probably around 220 -240k and no one else would touch it knowing that it was clocked so Keeping it was not an option, It had a leak in the cooling system, rotten seals, broken suspension. the list goes on. It was a poor condition car. Although someone said they new of people that would have paid asking price despite the miles which i doubt.

For what you spent and the money on top I would have just made it a project car and just upgrade stuff as you went along as it was now worth very little now.

I bought the car on Ebay
Sadly I think this says an awful lot.

Can you define what "checks" you carried out on the car prior to buying it to see if it was clocked?

I suppose another scenario could be that the "cocky Asian lad" wanted the car so filed a report with Experian to state that the car was clocked and then presented you with this evidence? Cunning perhaps.

The car he mentioned selling that day was probably the one sold to HennaseyXO infact it was an avant and he said 5.5k I have 3.5k or Your cash sitting in my draw! This <beep> needs to spend some time in prison.
