OBD II Connectors

Post by rikrose » Tue Sep 11, 2007 10:58 pm

So, we all know that VAG-COM is the one to use, however, I don't have a laptop. I do, however, have a Nokia N800, and I a contempalting trying/extending CarMan. Question is, does any ODB-II unit get access to everything useful on a facelift B5 S4?

By useful I mean data I can read - I'm not interested in setting anything....

I'm currently considering the ODBKey Bluetooth for the reading - anyone heard any scare stories about it? Anyone know any better Bluetooth ODB devices to use, that don't cost a small fortune?

UK model? What model year?

EOBD (the european version of OBD2) only works for 2000/2001 Gasoline or 2003/2004 Diesel engines, besides that it will only access engine control and not much more on your car.

Yes, UK model. Facelift, but with analogue clock.

Please be a little more precise, can't give you a straight forward answer otherwise.

Model year? Engine (code)?

1999 (or 1999.5). It's the 2.7TT engine, either AGB or APB - I'm not sure which, nor how to tell). From your answer above, it seems like it won't work.

Then EOBD will most likely NOT work on your car, since it was simply manufactured before that standard came into effect. FWIW, a specific diagnostic tool like VAG-COM will work fine and give you actually more functionality than OBD2/EOBD.

I was wanting to play with Carman, and before I did, I thought I should figure out whether I can actually read any of the data....

I have a bluetooth OBD2 plug in unit from the far east, works well, and I
have tried several programs on an ipaq (PPC with bluetooth obviously) only one works so far ObdGuage v1.3 (freeware)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... mot_widget

Now I have real time display or MAF, intake air temp, ign timing, rpm, throttle, etc

The ipaq is my sat nav so sits in a cradle anyway so its great, no wires.

The bluetooth obd2 unit should work with other software on a laptop etc, not tried it, I have vagcom and a lead so dont need it for that.

I really wanted boost egts, etc, but I havent found a ppc app that gives me this, maybe I can modify obdguage as it simply calls different engine codes - it obviously isnt designed for 2 of everything as well (V6) and 6 cyl not 4.

Anyway it is very good to be able to see what is going on and it logs as well and gives a peak hold of readings on screen.

Pleased with it, just need to try other software, it is ELM327 based so most of the software should talk to it.

Cheers
Nigel.

If you were somewhere nearby, I'd suggest trying it with CarMan and my N800...

I think I'm going with a fis-box, instead. Thanks though.
