The fact that people buy a +380bhp car, and then join an enthusiasts/owners forum pretty much implicitly indicates that they are quite fond of their car/licence/life. Installing and/or enabling in-motion TV does NOT automatically mean that the driver is going to watch it whilst controlling the car! Passengers may choose to - but not the driver. Daft to think otherwise ...

Well, i'm glad it's taken a middle-aged man with a teenager's hairstyle and a teenager with a middle-aged man's bank-balance(these heir's eh?) to get to the bottom of this one.

I'm certain everyone that has contributed to this thread is sensible enough to realise that no drivers were intending to use a TV whilst driving.

You have an opinion that it is dangerous to watch TV whilst driving and appear to be hell bent or forcing this opinion on everyone who’s willing to listen. If your aim is to mix it up a bit and force a controversial opinion down people’s throats, then I’d start off with something a little less obvious than it’s dangerous to watch TV whilst driving. If you really are a latter day saint fighting the good fight, then how about posting a poll on here and asking ‘Do you think it’s: a) Safe to drive whilst watching TV, b) Unsafe to drive whilst watching TV and how about a c) Safe to drive whilst drunk wearing a balaclava backwards'.
How long i have been on the forum has absolutely nothing to do with it.. If people need a forum poll to make their mind's wether or not it is a right or wrong thing to do then we really all are knackered!
Jarv wrote:I don’t know why I should be defending myself against you, you probably won’t listen anyway. But, here goes. I don’t watch TV whilst driving, I don’t condone watching TV whilst driving and I never said that I do watch TV whilst driving. I explained my reason for enabling TV in motion (in fact, it was the previous owner who enabled it) and I also stated that I used headrest monitors in the back of the car. It’s dangerous enough having a navigation screen that low, so watching TV and driving safely would be virtually impossible.
Hey, your the one who admited in your 1st post that you have a well hidden switch just in case you need to turn it off for some occasion..What occasion would that be then?? You know it is wrong to do yet you still do it.. No back pedalling now my friend just to make your self look squeeky.

I have absolutely no problem with in-car entertainment but when a DRIVER puts themselves in a position where they can visibly see a TV screen then you are asking for trouble. No matter how much you think you can resist taking a peek there's going to be a time when your brain stops working and you take a look, it's called human nature. Say for instance a live news flash comes on while listening to the radio which has devastating consequences to the world (which we have had a few of recently), you are not going to instantly turn your attention the the face of the stereo unit to listen to it now are you? TV on the other hand is both a visual and audial input and as such there are certain things that both the eye and ear has to see and hear together to interpret the full picture, those who can't see or hear fully are given signing and talk overs for this very reason. I hear you say 'Sat Nav' blah, blah, blah. Yes, but the sat nav is always blurring out the same and not something that is going to distracte you at a moments notice unlike the TV does with it randomness of who snoggin who in BB and about the cat being ran over in corrie, (not unless you have a dicky sat nav of course that tells you its going to self destruct in 10 seconds and smoke starts billowing out of it...)

BTW, I fully agree that the sat nav unit in the rs4 is in a totally wank position (not that I had it in mine thankyou).

I think you will find that those that know me personally on this board (thats quite a few btw), will know how seriously I take my driving yet how I also like to have alot of fun at the same time. I dont often spout off on 1 with all the name calling etc. (have i ever done it?) but when a subject like this comes up it which is so blantly stupid that it denies all belief yet your all talking about it like it is the done thing and how easy it is to do , I cannot but help myself, Im sorry.

FYI the 'millions' thing was a piss take to Dave because all he could genuinly argue back with was my spelling and that he wouldn't give me a job!! LOL..

I personally believe that being a good driver on the public roads needs very little skill behind the wheel (by that I mean how well you can pedal a car). No, what it requires is somethng a whole lot more. It requires constant attention, good spacial awareness with good observational skills and the abilty to interpret what you have obsevered and act upon it. Certainly not the last ( i cant be arsed to go on too much to what will be deaf ears) it requires certain amount of self responsibilty for you, you passengers, other road users, the general public. Im sure most of you are with me on that...

Tv and driver just doesnt mix it with me and I can guarentee the law will back me up everytime. As for comparing it to speeding offences...Phhhh.. get real!!

Certainly if some of you noobs can be bothered to look back at my posts from the past 4 yrs or more you will generally find I have tried to as helpful as I can with hard facts and little of the bullshit you can get. Phils old moto- 'Quality not Quantity'.

Just to clear one thing up, I trust your comment ‘Or you don’t catch up to me!!’ meant you hope you won’t come across anyone driving and watching TV because it might put you in a potentially dangerous situation, rather than anything else. Forum postings can be a sterile way of putting your feelings across and can, sometimes, be misconstrued.
Correct, but if you do crash into me while youv'e got your head buried in the TV screen then prepare to get leathered with the headrest I have just removed from my car which will aslo have a new TV screen imbedded in there when it goes back in!

What I actually said was:

"I have a well hidden switch on mine, there may be an occasion when it will be useful to physically switch off the ability to have TV in motion."

Notice the subtle difference?

I promise to never break the speed limit whilst watching it.

I have 'bucket seats' in my RS4 and there is a 100% chance that I could not physically slide down the seat low enough to see the screen, whilst driving, as I would not be able to see above the steering wheel. I mearly asked if it was possible to do. I would certainly, therefore, be no more distracted by the satnav, or radio or a cd, than I would if the TV/DVD was on.

My thoughts too.....

Also another small point is that as you cannot get Sky plus at the moment in you car, it maybe needed that you have to watch a particular programme, as you cannot pause it :D
BTW that was a joke

Interesting thread..... I'll leave the comments on the tone of the posts to one side, but would like to speak from my experience:

- On the RS4 I have a Kenwood system with TV in motion disabled.
- I rarely had the TV on whilst driving (Close to never), as I always had the Sat Nav on.

Then I think....

- I agree that the driver of the car should not be watching TV whilst it is in motion
- However, should visual sat nav be classed as the same...?

Agreed, it can be distractive, but less so than reading a map whilst driving.

I think smoking whilst driving is one of the worst. I used to do it many years ago before I gave up, so I speak from experience. Also, I thought there has been a clamp down on people using mobiles whilst driving. I see people do it every day of the week. I Can't abide it.

Definitely agree Jarv. I genuinely see at least half a dozen drivers (mostly van drivers...) using mobiles each day...

These are the real dangerous threats on the road....
