Paint Bubbling on Tailgate

Post by ScottyBoy » Tue Aug 21, 2007 6:13 pm

Sorry if this has been asked before but i did do a search and nothing came up,

Has anyone experienced paint bubbling or corrosion on there tailgate section where the lock is housed and also the small triangle pieces on the back windows. If so did you approach Audi and if so what was there response as i have taken mine to them today and am now waiting for an answer, apparently its quite a common problem with the 51 reg's.

I know that the black traingle bits on the back windows are common but didn't know about the tailgate.

The window bit on the drivers side started to bubble on mine about 1.5 years ago, I asked Audi and they said that it wasn't covered because it is trim and not body work. They said that as a mesure of goodwill they would supply the part but I'd have to pay for the fitting and I was ok with that untill 1, I found out how much the part cost(£20) and 2, I found out how long it was going to take to fit(4 hours as the door has to be split apart)

In the end I just put up with it as it's not that bad and isn't getting any worse

The tailgate is common on the RS4. It's the aluminium and poor prep at the factory IMHO. I had mine replaced under warranty many moons ago, been fine since.

I had the tailgate piece replaced under warranty a couple of years ago, absolutely no hassle from the dealers at all. As said above, it is down to poor prep/finishing of the strip.

I also did a deal on the triangular pieces where I paid 1/3rd, the dealer coughed up a 1/3rd and Audi picked up a 13rd of the cost...again a couple of years ago. This wasa goodwill gesture as they are classed as "trim" rather than bodywork. Apparently the same fault occurs on newer cars too.

The tailgate trim is very common on the RS4.

Mine has bubbled on one corner, and have bought a new one just last week. Around £60 odd.

Comes in primer. I have plans for this which should eradicate this corrosion problem in the future and look better. Watch this space!...

Same thing for me.......The tail part had to be strip, treated and respray. One of the rear triangle is starting seriously to corrode under the black gloss paint....I leave it as it is , will replace it when really necessary as i will have to strip the damn door :? Not cover by the warranty by the way......These parts are aluminium and tend to corrode to quick to my taste.... :!:

I might just try and get my brother to paint it then if it comes in primer...

I'll ask him to see if he can do it in situ...

I wouldn't do it in situ, as you won't get a good finish where it meets the tailgate around the top and sides. And also not a good finish on the underside where the lights, and handles go

Not hard to remove anyway, just the tailgate trim to come off, and then around 4 screws holding the trim itself. Obviously removal of the number plate lights.

It comes in a black sort of primer, so you should be able to paint virtually straight away or with some very fine rubbing down.

Mine should be done tomorrow, will post up some pics!

Same blenish. Why oh why oh why they made that part out of metal and not plastic or carbon fibre I have no clue.

How do I get it repaired? Is it still warrantied?
