Fecking Tyre Pressure Monitor!!

Post by Lig » Wed Aug 15, 2007 9:56 am

Hi Chaps,

I have a problem with my TPM - every time the car is cold and I start her up, the TPM gives me a warning (tyre symbol with line through it) telling me there is a problem with the TPM system. If I then turn the ig off and back on all is fine!!

This happens every time and its starting to pee me off :x ! If the car is warm or once I have turned off and back on and then stop for fuel etc it will be fine. Just happens when cold or if left for a good few hours.

It is due a service in a month or so and will get them to reset the system but dont really want to pay for them to check each sensor etc.

If anyone can shed any light on this it would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Lig.

Lig,

Could be a fault with the sensor but i would set all tyres to the desired pressure and then reset the TPM in the car. I did this once and it solved the problem.

If this fails you'll have to speak to Audi.

I had this the other day too. In the end when I restarted the car it was fine. Eh? But I reset the system. Maybe at the weekend I will do a fault scan and see what if anything has been logged.

Cheers

Had the same prob a few weeks ago, all on new boots too. Went to my local tyre guy to pump all four to 38psi and reset tpm - haven't heard from her since.

Cheers Chaps,

I have tried resetting a few times but still the same. I assume its OK to reset with ig on / tyres cold and then start driving?

Grant - would be interested if anything shows up.

It just seems bizzare that it is only on an initial test that it does this?? It wouldnt be as annoying if it did it all the time then I would either get it fixed or switch it off!!!

IT seems like there is a cut off of say 3 hours when it resets the system. IF i restart from cold, it will beep and i can instantly switch off and back on and all will be fine, until it has been stood for a few hours then it will do the same again.

I will get it checked.

if resetting won't work then you likely have a problem. these come in 2 varieties - batteries or sensors. if you log codes, these will tell you which and also allow you (using the measuring blocks) to see available battery life for each rfid tag (integrated with the valve). the fault code will identify which sensor is at fault if applicable. the sensors are under the wheel liner. the fault could be as simple as bad contacts, or require sensor replacement.

short answer: dealer job.

Cheers Chaps,

SKIWI - where are the batteries located? I have recently changed the tyres (however it was acting up before) and looked at the sensors in the tyres attached to the valves and they seem to be sealed units?

Can I just clarify are the sensors 'under the wheel liner' i.e not the chaps in the tyres these are the 'rfid tag'??

I will get the garage to check it out when its in!

Cheers,
Lig.

afaik the tyre pressure monitor monitors the different rotation speeds of the wheels (via the ABS kit) to check if one tyre is down on pressure so there are no sensors in the tyres as such.

correct, batteries are in with the rfid tag bolted to the inner of the tyre rim to the end of the valve. normal life is >5 years so shouldn't be an issue - mine still has 4 years left according to vag-com.

you are supposed to replace the valve stem with every wheel change but i presume that is normal preventative maintenance.

the sensors are what read the rfid tags - seated above the wheel behind the wheelliner. looking at vag-com you will see each tag read every 5 seconds or so in measuring block 16.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one suffering on this ... seems to happen to me a minute or so after starting up. I switch her on and get the 'OK' on the DIS, reverse out the garage, go back to close the garage door, back in the car and tyre with line through on the DIS. If I switch her off again it clears and no problem. Similarly no problem on an evening when leaving work ... I just put it down to the TPM not liking getting up in the morning.

It's been into Audi to look into but I've got a bit of a problem with my dealership as they refuse to touch the Bimotos so can't really check on the battery life of the sensors at present. I'm trying to persuade them to replace the control module first of all to see if that works and if not they can free issue me the sensors but they're not having any of it. I'll keep you posted with developments and likewise I hope you do the same.

Mine is going in for a service (audi specialist not a main stealer) in a month or so and I will let you know.

most likely replacement batteries required. you can disable the system from vag-com when disabled it displays a momentary waning on startup then clears...

Hi Skiwi,

when you say new batteries, I assume you mean new 'rfid' tags as they appear to be a sealed unit?? And £100 a pop!!

Cheers,
Chris.
