Talex speed camera and factory tinted windows

Post by GardinerG » Fri Aug 03, 2007 1:56 pm

I have a Talex (full version) speed camera detector that just doesn't want to work in my RS6. The problem seems to be that I have factory fitted tinted windows. The Talex will only pick up 1 satellite (if I am very lucky) when in the car), I've tried the window fixing kit etc.

Talex support told me that it uses a sirf 2 receiver, unlike my Tom Tom bluetooth GPS which uses sirf 3 and picks up 8 satellites.

Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know a solution besides buying a different one, or sticking it on the roof!?

Cheers

Grant

The SIRF 2 receiver is notoriously "deaf" and needs a strong GPS signal to work. The SIRF 3 is a much newer and better design which is much more sensitive.

Consign your Talex to the bin.

I would but it's only 1 month old

Does anyone know which speed camera detectors have SIRF III receivers, I am struggling to find which do or don't!

Grant,

I have a pogo alert which works well. 13 satellites typically from the front windscreen install.

As for GPS recievers, try Fortuna. Superb, and SIRF compliant.
Everyone is unique, just like you and me.

Does the unit have an external aerial socket at all? I know some makes of them do so you could add an aerial mounted on the roof.

Same here.

And my retrofitted RNS-E (GPS antenna underneath the dashboard) gets 8-9 satellites.
