Undertaking on motorways etc

Post by derdle » Mon Jul 30, 2007 11:59 am

Hi all,

Ever been stuck in lane 2 or 3 when some dozy twonk wont move over to an empty lane on their left?

Ever wanted to "undertake" legally?

Then why not sign the petition below to ask the Government to change motoring law to allow undertaking on dual carriageways and motorways.

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/undertake

Please feel free to propogate the url via e-mails to colleagues or into other forums.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul - my signature added...This has long been a bugbear of mine...

BTW - dont even get me started on Artics that seem to attempt to overtake an equally slow truck on the inside lane. Why do they deem it necessary to 'test' if their speed limiters are set at exactly the same speed !?

There is or was an experiment on a motorway somewhere which prohibits lorries overtaking during peak times. Dunno how it is going though.

Cheers for the signature btw!

As you say in the petition, it works well in the US.

never heard of that experiment. Dont suppose that it was that well police'd/publilcised - coz it sure as hell don't work in my neck of the woods. The A12/M25 just seems to be a constant rolling roadblock of :knob: in their Tesco/Sainsbury's lorries.......

Hmmm, i'm unconvinced. There's plenty of bad motorway drivers that struggle to even look in one mirror, let alone all three!

Let's just have traffic officers that enforce good driving, not just driving under the speed limit.

The whole point is that with an adequate awarenes campaign beforehand..all drivers will be aware that they will be undertaken. If we had a one year run-up, like they did with the smoking ban, then there is no reason why all drivers would not be aware. TV and radio adverts, flyers in with tax disc reminders, general mailing to all licence holders etc etc.

I have signed (not that I expect these petitions to yield any result). Having undertaken cars myself I am convinced that indeed these drivers do not look in any mirror. But why should they - they indend to stay in the middle lane until they need to exit. Even if they come up to another driver in the middle lane, they just slow down and join a middle lane train causing further disruption, but in the self-satisfaction that they are the safest drivers on the road. So as long as you don't undertake near an exit, there is zero danger.

I agree that the system works well in the US. Another thing they do very well in the US is right turn on red if clear. Is there a petition for the equivalent here?

No but we could always create one!

Absolutely. Would be left turn on red here of course.

The rule in the US is that as long as you stop, look, and your path is clear, you can turn right (providing there's no signs to the contrary). It makes so much sense and again works well.

It's easy enough to create a petition, but they don't all get accepted (I submitted one for government grants to be awarded to all S4 B5 owners for upgrading to K04s, on numerous economic grounds of greenness, etc but it was rejected as they found it to be humorous... )

That would create inequality in the community. You could try re-submitting but add that RS4's should be similarly upgraded with RS6 hybrids and then the KO4's can be recycled to the S4 owners... now that would gain attention!

Yea, that's true Paul, it was a bit selfish, wasn't it...?

In the meantime, are you going to start the "Left turn on red" petition or shall I?
