Odd High Speed fluel gauge

Post by RS4U » Thu Jul 17, 2003 4:17 pm

Hi everyone,
I have been reading your post for quite a time and am very much enjoying them, Thanks for all the good post...
Here is my little anecdote, it appended about a month ago.
I was droving from Switzerland to St-Tropez via Italy. No traffic on the Italian highway, so I pushed the pedal to the metal! (RS4 mod. stage II, no speed lim) From Aosta to Genova my speed never went below 220 and very often over 300km/h.
As expected you could almost see the gasoline gauge drop...
Very soon the reserve light came the on. Seconds after, I passed a sign telling that the next two gasoline stations where 5km and 35km away. The on-board computer was showing about 50km remaining. So, no problem I'll go to the second one. Well, wrong… The engine turned off 2km after the reserve light, due to not a drop of gasoline left...
I was at 305km/h... no more power steering, no more assisted braking. I managed to glide the car the remaining 2km to the pump, the car went to stop exactly in front of the pump. What a luck not even needed to push it. The job of exiting the highway was so hard. The steering wheel was like a stone. To get to the pump I had to take two curves (Right then quick left) at over 100km/h. I nearly didn't manage it. It was so hard to hold-on to the wheel to take the curve. After filling the tank, (now I know that mine has 61.65liters) I continued my way to France putting gasoline just before hitting the reserve.

The fuel gauge seems to have worked in a very weird way when I am at full speed for a very long drive. This could have turned out quite bad. (Stopping an RS4 that's going at 300km/h with the engine off is hell) My on-board computer is usually right on the money (Slow Swiss driving) so I trusted I had 50km left when in fact it was more like 2km
So for all of you speeder, look at your fuel level.

Did this ever happen to any of you?

When the reserve comes on you have about 8 litres left - that's not too many miles at those speeds.
Standard RS4 (is it the only standard one left?)

I can confirm that fuel gauge sometimes does strange things, when mine comes on, it can be showing anything between 60 and 30 km left... So my adrenaline goes up until I find a gas station...

good to have u back in Switzerland
