Because people expected a Porsche GT3RS AND a Lexus LS460 rolled into one for the price of a well optioned 5 series. EVO had the old RS4 beaten by the E46 M3 and indications are, they really like the new one.
Regardless of what EVO prefer, the point is that BMW have never had such stiff competition from audi. The M3 would have to be monumentally good and an absolute classic to "beat" a car such as the RS4 which has proven itself multiple times over the last 2 years. The truth is the the new M3 just isn't that car and hence it will not have a landslide victory/hard-core following as the E46 M3 did.
Totally agree, M3 will NOT be the car to beat the RS4. The RS4 is the best Car I have driven in the last 5 years.

Compared to other Audis... sure. Me I have driven MANY cars that make the RS4 look like a used granny's slipper.

I think you're missing the point. I would bet pretty much all of us on this site have owned/driven cars that would put the RS4's performance to shame. It isn't about performance...it is about the overall package. Currently, there is practically nothing out there that beats the combination of performance/build quality/reliability/handling and practicality that the RS4 provides. The E92 M3 certainly doesn't make the RS4 feel like a slipper and neither did the E46 M3 or CSL for that matter.

I sometimes wonder why you bought an RS4 if you hate audis so much.

Name them then?? I guess you mean driven as against owned??

I've driven far quicker cars than the RS4 & owned a couple that in pure performance terms were quicker, but each was a comprimise of some description.

My guess is you've driven quicker cars, perhaps even owned quicker cars, but driven/owned ones that make an "RS4 look like a used granny's slipper" i doubt it as they don't really exist.

As already said, the RS4 is one of if not the most capable all-rounder on the market today, unless you know of any cars we can't get over here in the UK. The M3 is capable, the M5 is capable, but they lose out in the UK due to the pi$$ poor weather we have.

Exactly. This is the thing with the RS4 Esp in Avant form, it is the most complete car you can get. Thats the nail on the head. Show me a better car, as when i was looking for my new car the RS4 was the 1st one i looked at, tried all the others. And went straight back to the RS4, it wasnt even close
Long Gone - 2007 Daytona Grey RS4 Avant - Privicy Glass - Tech Pack - Arm Rest (which i now ever use) - REAL RS4 Seats :)

599GTB, 430s, 997TT, AMV8, 9974S. You know what they say about jack of all trades. The RS4 is not really luxurious enough to be a "pimp mobile", a CLS with bitchin' Giovannas for example, neither is it a sports car like a 997, neither is it practical as a XC90, neither is it a decent off roader like a Landy, if there is real snow on the ground, Canada style, no quattro will save it. It really is only good for people who want to drive very fast in the rain for some reason.

Pimp mobile?!?? The RS4 is luxurious enough and better made than any recent Merc I've seen...not to mention more reliable. It is hugely practical, especially in avant form. It never tried to be an off-roader so that comparison isn't really valid. As far as snow, quattro helps hugely but it is the tyres that will make the biggest difference.

I've previously owned a modified Noble M400 which outperforms all the cars on your list on road and track (even in standard form). I wouldn't class myself as "one of those people who only like driving fast in the wet" as you say above. I love driving on dry and wet roads no matter what car I'm driving (2WD or 4WD). I could push the M400 in different ways to what I can with the RS4 but that doesn't mean driving the RS4 is any less rewarding. If you find it so, I suspect that you have not pushed the car anywhere near its limits...which is hardly a fault of the car.

I'm beginning to wonder whether or not you actually have an RS4. If you do, it would seem you are thoroughly unimpressed by it, but I suspect it may be something to do with your car alone, hence I would:

1. Take it back to the dealer to ensure all is well with it.
2. Try and drive someone else's RS4 to ensure you haven't bought a "dud"...which is what appears to have happened.
3. Invest in a car control/handling day to discover what you can actually do with a car like this.

Its funny coz over on the M3 Board our resident Ruski is defending the RS4.

I don't really care what you like/dislike, but who the f**k wants a "pimp-mobile" anyway?

FFS.

For me, two or four-up down to the Alps 3/4 times/year for some snowboarding & Cote d'Azur to visit friends, there isn't a car that beats the RS4.

The Ferraris & Porsche's can't do that (plus they're far too ostentatious for my liking - although I'd never say "No" to a GT3!), a Cayenne Turbo S or big Merc (for old men IMHO...I'll never own a Merc) can't go round corners, - plus you need your own oil refinery to run one, an Aston is way out of my budget, and although beautifully engineered, suffers from the same criticism as the Fezzas and Porkers...

Conceivably the M5 is a competitor, but it is a big car for myself and my wife...I don't need all that car and don't really want to have to pay for it.

The choice was a no-brainer in the end, although I really wanted a RS5...because the potential dormant in a turbo-charged car far exceeds that in a NA one.

In fact the RS4 is the first non turbocharged car I've owned in over 10 years.

The turbocharged 4WD package is the epitomy for me on the basis that power is nothing without control, and more often than not, our roads are covered in one kind of s**t or another. Thats where my car will spend 99% of its time so thats whats important to me.

WRC cars are all turbocharged 4WD cars which says it all....

We'll change our A3 for a RS5 in due course.

That said, I do fancy the idea of a V12 Tdi Q7 with more torque than the Titanic.

Hehehehe.

I'll bet you've owned NONE of these, I drive most with the option of buying.
the AMV8 was just crap along with the CLS it could not go round corners quickly, I really think either your RS4 (if you have in fact bought one!!!!) has a fault, or .................................................. well you must on something :)

Owned, no. But I have driven these cars, some a lot (430 in Fiorano for two days.) to be able to form a semi-qualified opinion.
