Big, shiney exhaust pipes

Post by Dippy » Tue Jul 15, 2003 1:23 pm

I know that I'm Mr. Q compared to most people here, but I've gotta tell you about a car I saw this morning.

On the way to work I noticed a newish Golf up ahead with a shiny exhaust pipe on the nearside. I mostly noticed it 'cos it was really shiney, but then that it was really big bore. It was one of those exhaust pipes which was so big that it really looks stupid (to me) because there's no way that it gives any performance advantage as it's a bigger bore than the exhaust system itself.

So there's me thinking that the owner has ruined the appearance of his Golf with such a big exhaust pipe, when I saw that it was twice as bad: There was an identical exhaust pipe on the offside!

I'm not sure if there are any Golfs which have exhaust systems like that, but even if there are it looked stupid. Of course if it was a Golf with a single exhaust, and the owner had stuck a fake one on???

Do people buy cars based on how many exhaust pipes it has?

At GTi International last year there was a s/h dual exit exhaust for sale complete with rear skirt to suit, to fit on a mkII golf.
Wouldn't be so bad if it was dual all the way back from something like a VR6, but this was split just in front of the rear axle, and was for a 1.8 !!

I think that the R32 has pipes exiting from both sides

Err, your right.
Just re-read dippy's post. I missed the bit about 'newish golf'.

I guess it depends on whether it looked OE or like this...

It's all the rage for the golf/saxo/corsa brigade, even our friends at Milltek are pushing dual exit conversions.

I'm 99% sure it wasn't an R32.

From what you guys have said, it was quite likely that it was some sort of add-on exhaust to give that "wow - look at my car, it's got 2 exhausts so it must be fast!".

Come to think of it the BMW M3 and some X5s have 2 lots of twin pipes don't they. In fact I only recently realised that the M3 has a lateral silencer like the TT, so it could have as many outlets as they want!

I suppose when I was younger and my penis was bigger than my brain, I might have been impressed by that sort of thing. However I have been trying to remember what mods I did to my first cars, and I'm sure that I didn't even put 'go-faster-stripes'. No - I was boring: All my mods were 100% performance related.

Very nice Alan.
My mate has a blue R32 on order.
they keep telling him delivery will be delayed due to paint supply problems though (yeah, right !)
Should have been delivered in March and he is still waiting !

Btw, nice field too

"Paint supply problems"???

What a load of

If he's totally fed up tell him to look here: www.findmycar.com
They currently show 6 in stock at UK dealers.

We got ours, exact spec. we wanted, UK dealer supplied car, within 3 days.
Ok it cost a £500 finders' fee but better than going through all the with your local dealer and being messed about

Thanks for the tip, I'll tell him when he returns from his hols.

Stupd thing is he is a very good customer of the garage, so you would have thought they would have looked after him.
If he doesn't get it soon they'll all be shut down for the next month or so...
