RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
I have just finished installing an RNS-E in my '03 RS6, so it is in place of an RNS-D. The car has a problem with the CAN Gateway/TMC module and I'm trying to source a replacement which may explain some of my questions, but not all of them. I have searched but there isn't a vast amount of detail on upgrading from a D to an E.
Firstly I have 2 connectors left over that don't fit the RNS-E: One is a 10-pin round male plug similar to an S-video connector and the other is one of the type that have an arm that pulls and locks them into place (sorry I don't know what connectors are called) and is a shorter vesion of one there is a place for in the RNS-E.
Everything seems to work as it did with the RNS-D (so not the directions in the DIS, nor the radio station there either), but I have nav, radio and CD changer. No TV though so this must be driven by the cables I can't connect. Are there adapters for the last bit available (I used one from eBay for the rest and it was fine bar one pin that had to be moved)?
Secondly I have a Bluetooth kit 8P0 862 335 H which I understand is the 2007 one. It all connects up OK and the harness with it seems to be good but the RNS doesn't see it and my phone can't find it as a BT device. I haven't coded it yet so might that be the only problem? I need to get a licensed VAG COM before I can try, but I'm worried it's too new a bluetooth kit for my RNS or it's faulty.
Lastly there is no connection I can see for the lights so consequently it doesn't switch to night mode and I imagine the buttons won't light up. How is it supposed to know when the lights are on?
If anyone has a suggestion where I can get a CAN Gateway I'd be very grateful - I've tried All Audi in Bristol and Parts Finder but it seems nobody can be bothered to locate one for me as I assume someone has broken an Audi with one - either that or I want a discount on my insurance for driving a model that never gets written off.

RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
You will need to code the BT module, as the RNS-E won't recognise it otherwise. And thus your phone will also not pair with the BT module.
I did mine today, and if its anything the same as mine, then IIRC, its the 5th digit which corrosponds to the BT module.
As for the buttons not lighting up, then this must be a CAN issue. But I would have thought the A6 would be CAN enabled??

RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
Ahh, but my CAN gateway is borked. That said the RNS-D has a wire connected for lights, but nowhere similar on the E.
Thanks for confirming the BT is probably OK and it's a coding issue. I also need to code it to RHD as the nice (much nicer than the D lady, in fact the whole RNS-E experience is incredibly superior) speaks from the left front at the moment.

RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
the round plug and the rectangular one with the locking mechanism are indeed for the TV tuner. i think you need to upgrade the tuner but i'm not sure which one you need, i'm sure there'll be something on fleabay if you do a search

RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
Even though the D has a wire for illumination, on the E this is controlled through the CAN, or at least this is what i've learnt/read.
BT module shouldn't be a problem. Will need to be coded accordingly.

RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
Basically it sounds to me like you have not removed the TMC module and rejoined the can to the cluster.
the rns-e gets illumination over can bus.
wire it up correctly and the rns-e and bt module will work regardless of coding.

RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
The TV tuner should be disconnected as it will interfere with the can bus unless upgraded to a C or D model
Re: RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
You're absolutely right I haven't - this is the first time I've heard about doing that. Can you point me at some info on how to do it?craigyb wrote:Basically it sounds to me like you have not removed the TMC module and rejoined the can to the cluster.

RE: Re: RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
All sorted. I didn't realise the separate CAN gateway/TMC module wasn't required with the RNS-E - lucky for me though as mine wasn't working.
I now have illumination, info in the DIS, it turns on and off with the ignition, I think I have a reverse wire connected and the Bluetooth works but not interactively with the RNS - hopefully that is down to coding?
It's not easy fitting all the wiring behind the unit but otherwise I'm very happy with it. Thanks for giving me the vital clue Mr B

What version of the Bluetooth module do you have? The following modules only have basic functions with the RNS-E
8E0 862 335
8P0 862 335 A
8P0 862 335 D
8P0 862 335 E

Re: RE: Re: RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth.
Read the post again, he says he has an H module
Coding for RNS-E should be 00xxx7xx,
Coding for BT in an RS6 should be 0010722

Cool, thanks. I should get my VAG COM tomorrow hopefully.
On another note, does the Audi DAB tuner work with the RNS-E or is it later generation only?

No it doesnt work, new A6/A8/Q7 and A5 only.
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: RNS-E upgrade - TV tuner & bluetooth
That's what I thought. So I guess a Revo or similar is my best bet? I've had DAB in the car since I bought a Pioneer hideaway box in 2000 and I really miss it.

OK, I misted that bit of the post... But just because it's got H on the box, does not mean the internals are the H version. I've seen at least one box which was sold as M but had the D internals.craigyb wrote:Read the post again, he says he has an H module
