VMAX Prep and Tips?

Post by GrahamS4 » Mon Jul 02, 2007 9:54 am

VMAX Prep and Tips?

My first VMAX next weekend as per seperate thread. For those that have been before, can you help/add anything here? I have already picked up a few points from reading on Piston Heads which seems to be the home of the VMAX event.

My planned prep:

Wash the car (less drag!)
Check oil/water
Check tyre pressures
Check wheel bolt torque
Visual inspection of tyres (repeated on arrival)

I don't carry much unecessary weight so I don't have much to take out hence probably won't bother.

Fuel. Can anyone who has been tell me how much they think advisable to have for the day without having to go and get more? Half tank, 3/4 tank, full tank?

Ideally starting every run with a quarter tank would be good but then that can't be done. The track isn't that long but how quick does the fuel dissapear after 7+ top (or near) speed runs?

As the F1 at Silverstone will force me to go a little out of my way to join the M1 to head north I will probably treat the car to one last drink of the BP102 fuel available in MK just to make sure I am not suffering from any retarded timing on the day.

Any other tips?

I have read on PH heads how the rolling start doesn't make a big difference (opposed to a dead start from the bottom of the straight). However I can't help but think in a lesser powered car that may well not reach it's absolute top speed in ~1.5 miles of acceleration space that the speed coming out of the bottom bend is crucial to a good high speed run.

Can anyone think of a some use for some VAGCOM logs while I have the chance to get some at some at the higher end of the speed scale? Otherwise I would probably rather not have the laptop rolling around!

Anyone been in either a stock B5 S4 or or just a stage 1/2 car before?

Morning Graham.

Unfortunately last time I only got a couple of runs in, but the main thing to remember is that it goes on all day, so loads of runs possible ... some with passengers, some without, etc etc ... I emptied my boot last time I Was there, and also brought some jerry can's to save going to fill up with fuel (but never ended up using them), but no one else did that!

The bottom corner, I defiantly think the more speed you carry out of there the better the top speed run is going to be, unless you hit your terminal speed before the timing gates. (Plus, rolling starts are easier on the car!)

I was thinking of dropping down south a little to pick up some 102, little out of my way since I will coming from Peterborough in the morning, but hey, why not!

Graham,

You could log the timing & acceleration. Can you do EGT's ?

Not sure what you mean by EGTs?

So I could log 003 and 115 as usual and speed.

I could measure acceleration so long as the starting speed is not a speed I will reach on the small straight prior to the scorner before the straight.

Sorry, exhaust gas temperatures. Its an engine block but I can't remember the number.

Acceleration wise, maybe 120-150 or 120-160 :)

Graham, last year I averaged 7 to the gallon for the 10 runs I did. So you will need a minimum of half a tank. Check all the above and stagger your runs throughout the day. I did two runs back to back and then left it for 25 minutes......

As Viperbl said the secret is as much speed as you can from the bottom bend. Believe me 172 mph soon comes up and you have hit the timing beams, then it's hard on those brakes!!!

Rich...why bother with the 102 fuel (at £2.40 odd per litre)? Has your ECU been remapped to use it? Don't think you'll gain anything otherwise.
