There seems to be confusion with regards to the relationship of smoke on start up and oil consumption.

If your car is smoking on start up then there must be a direct cause for this. If this as some of you are being told by the dealers 'is normal' then they obviously must know exactly what causes it, so i would be interested as to what the dealers are saying it is. Without an explaination you must assume its far from normal, so there must be a faulty part causing it.

All engines use oil. The RS4 engine is designed to do just that but obviously you dont want an oil burner.
If you are not noticing any movement in your oil level then its probably because ;-
You are taking measurements at different operating temperatures. (oil level rises the hotter and harder an engines been run)
You are taking them in different locations. Ie a slight banking in the road will show a significant change in oil level.
You are using the car on short journeys / town driving which may show a RISE in oil level due to excess water in the oil.
If you notice a sudden drop in your oil level then it may just be because youve been on a long run and the water in the oil has evaporated!

I must say , If my RS was smoking on start up, I'd be back at the dealership ASAP. smoke is not right Full Stop, no new petrol engines no matter what state of tune should smoke on start up,someone said there porsche smoked on start, none of mine ever did and some had covered 140K+.
Condensation yes, smoke NO.

Sorry i'd stick my neck out and say all flat 6 Porsches smoke at some point on start up, you may not notice it but it does happen and is perfectly normal. The pistons are HORIZONTAL so oil sometimes passes the rings.
Now the RS4 pistons are not Horizontal so you would not have that issue.

Without wishing to hijack the thread, what is the correct way to check your oil level?

The handbook is a little vague (as was Audi Customer Services when I phoned them today)...

For arguments sake, what temperature should the oil be at when you check the level?

Viscosity is obviously a function of temperature....

I checked mine 2 mins after a run, and first thing when cold in the mornings, not much if any difference, so when cold is fine.

Does it most times, but then the car can sit for a week between starts.

audijohn,

Thats weird because when I check mine cold its way down the dipstick...well below MIN.

But when I check it warmed up (i.e., after the limit to 7000rpm warning goes out), its in the acceptable range....

Anyone else observe this behaviour?

Well when I first picked mine up(3 weeks ago) I got it home and checked the oil after 5 mins, It was only just showing on the dip-stick,I was not pleased, put 1.25 Ltrs in and it's needed NONE since. One thing though the oil is so clean you have to look carefully to check where the level is.
Just been out to check it now cold, it's 1/8 of an inch BELOW where it would be HOT.

Hmmmm....

Interesting. I'm suspecting my dealer hasn't put the correct amount of oil in it because having only driven it ~600 miles, I should not be having to add any more than 0.5 lts judging by the worst case scenario in the handbook (0.5 lts/1000km).

I concur with the oil being so clean you have to look very carefully to see where the level is.

When cold my oil level is only just showing on the lower bobble (which scared the **** out of me when I first checked!), but when warm, is in the A region as illustrated in the handbook....

So I see a huge variation in level with the oil temperature.

I've phoned Audi about it to see if this is normal.

Waiting for answer.

I think you will find if you top it up to the Top plastic bit in my photo, then when cold it will not move much, I think that extra 1/2 ltr goes into a "smaller narrow area" and this is why i'm seeing little change and you on the otherhand are not.
