Air filters ...

Post by S4TAN » Thu Jun 14, 2007 11:35 am

... an old topic that's been discussed many times before I know, but .... just thought I'd share my latest discovery:

I've tried stock paper, K&N panel, Green panel ...

... but now I've got an ITG foam panel filter.

This is by far and away the best filter I've tried to date - ok; so I've got no empirical evidence (vagcom logs etc) to back this up but I know my car well, and I know when something "feels" different.

The car breathes so much easier on start-up/idle and pulls magnificently through the gears - feels so much more "free" ...

No doubt the sceptics will scoff, dismiss and refute (as per usual  ), but do I care? ... No, i do NOT!

For anyone out there with an open mind who's considering buying a replacement panel filter - try an ITG foam panel, personally I think it blows away the paper and cotton gauze versions ...

End of info bulletin.

Interesting results Jules.

You may remember that I tried one of these and found no discernible difference, although I haven't tried K&N, etc for comparison, but it certainly did nothing for me compared with stock

Every car is different, and of course you're on K04s now, but if it works for you, kool! 8)
I know the "feel" is just as important, but do you have any empirical results? (logs...preferably big ones... )

I'm not discrediting you Julian, but for the sake of whatever vagcom costs ~£200? you really should invest.

All these things you try would be great with your experieince and a little data to go with it.

If the car feels better but is not flowing any more air, great, good tip off, cheers. If the car feels better AND is flowing more air then even better, I'm placing my order now!

Even with data it's hard to tell though. My logs tell me I am seeing a MAX MAF increase of 5 whatevers they are measured in since I had a service, fresh oil of course, new stock paper filter and those S2 spark plugs Doug recommends.

I actually took logs as it felt really good after the service. Considering I had it on track the day before it wasn't because I hadn't been using it.

Now I don't think I'd notice 6bhp or wahtever the MAF increase equates to.

Was it because of a clean filter (old not that dirty looking)? Was it the plugs. Was it both?

Was it me - car serviced = must be better?

If anything factors like fuel load and outside temp all worse than when previous logs taken.

Unlike yourself I don't rate my ability in judging these things, so just my preference to see a little data.

Thought Julian had Vagcom?? :?

Anyway, I know what you mean about feel, Graham. I left the S4 with a mate the last time I went away, and noticed that it was "only" boosting to 15psi, so he gave all the visible hoses a tighten. Now the gauge still reads 15 at full boost (havent checked with Vagcom recently), and it does sit slightly below 0 when switched off, but the car has "felt" more lively since I returned. My initial reaction was that it was just the comparison of having driven a 2.2l Isuzu Rodeo "Sport" for the previous 10 days, which felt like it needed new spark plugs...but nearly 2 weeks on, she still "feels" the same...

Jules - are you sure this apparent performance increase doesn't coincide with the fitting of your new RS246.com sticker...???!

Really Clive? I thought you had the S-Flow with ITG cone but never fitted it? (then flogged it to h8cak??)

Unlike yourself I don't rate my ability in judging these things, so just my preference to see a little data.

Fair enough Graham - but honestly: I don't rate my ability to judge per se ... it's simply that I know MY car well (I do well over 20K miles per year) and think I can detect changes in it ... (but certainly take your point about the data)
Thought Julian had Vagcom??
Nah - still a Luddite! But I appreciate what you and Graham are saying ...
Jules - are you sure this apparent performance increase doesn't coincide with the fitting of your new RS246.com sticker...???!
haven't got the new sticker off Damian yet - so you can discount this as being responsible ...

Again: as I say - I have no data to back this up - but bottom line is it feels really good to me, and "better" than with any other filter - in my book that's good enough ... I just thought I'd share with the forum purely for informative reasons and for anyone who may be vaguely interested... (I'm not an ITG salesman, am not connected with the company, and don't have shares in them  )

(as an aside: one thing I did notice is that with the K&N and Green filters the rubber moulded frame that holds the filter element material covers part of the available area of the element - but with the ITG it doesn't, so there may be a slight increase in available surface area for air with the ITG ...)

Anyway: onwards and downwards ... :bigwave:

Sorry Jules, in my haste, I totally misread what you'd written! You're absolutely right, it was the ITG cone.

MAF or fats readings with stock airbox paper, then stock k&n, then ITG
then cheese holed airbox as above
and then ITG cone mod would be very useful... its just having the time :o)

My air-box already has more holes in than a scabby whores knickers Ol and i'm vagcom-less, so can't do any tests like that ...

h8cak has an ITG cone (the AWE S-Flow) ... maybe he can chip in on this and comment as to his findings...

KayGee tested a K&N vs. Stock Paper I believe with no MAF reading difference.

Hmmm ... would be interesting to know (a): if KG maxes out his MAF sensor (is it stock S4 or RS4?), and (b): WHERE in the rev range he hits max MAF with either filter ... the point being if he's hitting max MAF earlier in the range with one filter than the other ... (could imply it's flowing more air maybe?)

Jules - did you change your MAF to RS4 when putting in K04s? What about the pipework?
