Saw an S4 saloon on the M4

Post by Dippy » Wed Jul 02, 2003 12:55 pm

I saw an A4 coming up behind me and noticed the grill was different. As it got closer it clearly wasn't the "Quattro" badge so I guessed it was an S4. When I moved over to the left ('cos my exit was coming up) it overtook me and I saw the S4 badges more clearly.

It certainly is a Q-car as apart from the badges it looked no different from any other A4 I have seen (i.e. crap IMO). At least the B5 S4 is obviously different from the B5 A4.

As the S4 overtook me, the driver clearly put his foot down for no apparent reason than, I assume, to try to impress me?

I assume that Audi have successfully lured drivers away from BMW then!

Opportunity missed Dave - if that was me I'd have forgone the motorway exit and then put my foot down as he came past - got to show them who's boss.

Childish really

ha ha ha Joshie I've got to agree, I too would have been soooooo tempted to have a go.

I've only had one occurance of a possible 'have a go' in 18 months of owning my S4. It was the very day I got my remap done. I was WOT at every opportunity with an ear to ear grin the whole way home to Aberdeen . I didn't really notice a Subaru trying to take me on the outside lane as we accelerated hard from roundabout to roundabout. It was all over before I thought to myself he was 'having a go'

I was so chuffed I'd ran for the first 9months with 40bhp less than I should have been - fecking Specialist cars Audi - MUPPETS

Are you taking the mic..? I thought I'd bored everyone and their dog about the first 9 months of owning my S4.

i.e. 14+ visits to my local Audi dealer 'Specialist Cars in Aberdeen.

The car was flipping up an EPC light. I discovered the ECU etc had never been replaced as part of a 'Quality improvement' Audi Uk honoured the recall some 3 years latter and I had the ECU/DVs/and TBB replaced but the car never ran right for much longer than 6miles every time I got it back from Specialist Cars. It would throw the EPC light and go into limp mode.

I had ignorant service people sitting me down to explain. "Well you know sometimes these things happen and well I think Cosworth have been fiddling with it."

I bought the car direct from Cosworth. When Audi bought Cosworth the top men got 4 new S4s in the deal (Apparently)

It took Specialist cars 6 months and 14+ visits to finally discover that the new ECU was looking for a rolling code from the original fixed code immobiliser. Once they changed the immobilser i.e. the drivers display unit speedo. The EPC light stayed out.

However I was still convinced the car wasn't boosting properly and returned the car several times. They responded, "The car is running the same as any other S4 and checks out fine."

Still not convinced, I compared my car with a mate’s S4. His had the same performance as mine i.e. flat! So I disappointingly thought it must be ok.

Convinced the EPC light issue had been resolved I took the car to AMD for a remap.

Geoff confirmed the car was 40bhp down due to a torn TBB and faulty exhaust temp sensor. There are two of these for each bank of 3 cylinders. One had already thrown a wobbler months earlier and had been replaced. I’m sure it was these sensors that were responsible for the initial EPC light fault in the first place before the ECU replacement.

Anyway, the car runs fantastic now, except for the odd 'intermittent exceeded boost" moment which resorts to limp mode. A flip off of the ignition resets and off I go.

It would seem Star Performance’s shortening of the DV vacuum hose has not resolved this problem. I’m still convinced the DV’s are to blame for this. So having checked the original bosch DV's they are going back on the car this weekend to see if the problem lies with them.

I have this problem on mine, let me know if you find the solution

No, I honestly don't remember that story.

I must remind Forge about those springs...
