Should I change to an RS?
New to these forums so be easy with me.
I have an B6 S4 at the moment but am thinking of changing up to an RS. The question I have is for people that have done what I'm thing of, was it worth it?

I went B6 S4 to B7 RS and the differences are infectious!
There's the obvious performance hike (plus many other improvements) but the main step up to me is the handling - not just the seat-of-your-pants bits, but driving down any normal road. The steering on the S4 (which I still drive at times) feels like it's on ice compared to the RS. It tells you so little about the road beneath and the attitude of the car, whereas with the RS, you have all the info you need in the palms of your hands...
I never had a problem with the S4 until I drove the RS, so suggest you think carefully before trying one out...

Another question, how do you guys pay for your cars if you don't mind me asking.
I have always tended to pay cash for my cars but in this day of finance everything am I better to lease a car rather than buying it?

With good PCP quotes pretty widely available now and presumed second-hand RS4 resale values likely to be relatively good, it makes more sense to buy on finance.

Actually it's the worst way to finance a new car, especially one like a RS4

The interest is a) high b) front loaded and you are, to a degree, bound to the car/agreement for the full term for it to have any value at all.
If you are not paying cash funding via Balanced payment lease purchase is the only way to go

Never one toon another man's bag of chips.....but PCP's are the work of the devil and are set up to suit the lender far more than the chap (or chapess) funding.
What I do know is the quote I got a while back on which you can make your own judgement on attractiveness:
Example.
£61k car
£11k deposit
£50k to finance
£25k final payment
36 * £954
Cost of credit £9423
~7.5% "APR" (although APR is a BAD BAD comparison for finance quotes on PCPs I was told)
£50k in bank
6% APR
40% higher rate tax payer that declares tax
3 years later, £55596 in bank
Total "cost" of credit = £3826.
So, in 3 years time, could you sell a £61k car for £28,826 (25,000+3,826)? I would think so.
Or, even if you assume you only get £25k for the car after 3 years, you only need about 9.5% tax inefficient savings (e.g. a bank) or 5.9% if you use tax efficient savings, to make the whole thing neutral still.
If you are more adventurous with your investments or invest in property...you will do even better with your saved "cash" and improve on the above.
I know there are millions of ways that you can finance a car, but I was given the above PCP quote which seemed very good. It obviously gambles on the future value of the car...which can to a degree be guessed based on past similar models etc. If one wants to exit the finance agreement, I'm sure there are penalties...but the above assumes that you will want to keep for 3 years.
How does balanced payment lease purchase work Gareth and do you have any comparable quotes to the above example? I'd be interested to hear as this time round I paid cash and regretted it given the quotes I got.
