S4 >> S6

Post by nickb834 » Mon Jun 04, 2007 1:19 am

Presently I'm running around in a B5 S4 and thinking of swapping it for a C5 S6, what I was wondering is - what's the fuel economy (or lack thereof) like?

If I drive my S4 normally I'll average 23, if driven like a saint 30, and like a hooligan about 17....how does that compare to an S6?

What are they like for reliabilty - do they go on to run mega miles with no problems? (My S4 is coming upto 190K miles)

Has anybody else moved from a B5 S4 to an S6, what are your thoughts?

Lastly what is this DRC I've seen mentioned (Grizz's sig and a post by CliveH) I can't seem to find any info about it?

Ta for any and all answers!

Nick

Nick,
What a well timed post.
I am currently considering the same thing. I average 22 mpg but got 29 on my last motorway run but have seen figures of 11 mpg for the first 100 miles of a tank when really hoofing it, so the fuel consumption question is really key.

I'd also tow my rally car occassionally with it so what the fuel consumption is like towing would be interesting.

The biggest thing for me would be the gearbox. I love the driving experience of a manual and as all S6's where tiptronics I think that would make my mind up on whether I could get used to it straight away.

The other thing is they seem to be as rare as rocking horse pooh, with wildly differing prices.

tombs did a good write up in this section from a B5 to C5 with his post of "I got one".

As I understand it the DRC issue is something that only affects the RS6.

John

Yeah I read Tombs thread - can't recall if it was before or after this post, given the relative quiet in here it didn't take me long to read all the posts in every thread :-)

I found out that DRC indeed only does affect RS6's (Well RS4 B7's too) not S6's - which is reassuring.

I've seen some S6's under 10k - high milers but then that doesn't frighten me off as long as they haven't used Netto's own brand engine oils :-)

Only thing missing for me to find out is what fuel bills are like.

Hi my s6 gets about 18-20mpg about town and the best I've seen on a run is 25.8mpg.
I tow my rally with mine and on the run over to the jim clark this year it was just over 20 sitting about 55 most of the way.
On a trip to switzerland last year in averaged 22 for the trip including long high speen runs on the autobahn.
I have grown to like the autobox its great when you get into traffic and when towing.

Thanks for that mate - hit the nail right on the head did that!

Is it you that has the g-wagen and the Golf? Always fancied a g-wagen to play about with, something different than the ubiquitous 90 / 110 - or even 88 if you're that way inclined :-)

Yes I do have the g wagen and the mk2 golf I like to be different very few people rally a mk2 golf or do off road competitions in a g wagen . The g wagens great fun off road will go almost anywhere and with front and rear difflocks as standard and a virtually indestructable transmision there very reliable.
I've had my s6 a couple of years now and realy like it I was going for an rs6 but you cant legally tow with an rs6 and the running costs for the s6 are much cheaper anyway.

Why can't you tow legally with an RS6? is it soemthing to do with it's construction at the back?

I would imagine it is because no towbar has been type approved for fitting to the RS6. I think that is the same for the B5 RS4. It's not that it isn't capable of towing it's that no towbar manufacturer has got their equipment approved for use with them probably because the expected demand is so low.

Thank's rallye for the info. I'd be towing my MK2 Escort rally car so probably similar weight to your Golf.

I see as per every other audi model that the avants are more expensive (more desireable?!) than the saloons.

Cheers,
John

Towing in the RS6 puts more strain on the gearbox (which is already at the rated limit IIRC), hence Audi saying it will invalidate your warrantee. But you can do it, providing you know the risks. You try to boot it while pulling a caravan in the RS6 and the only thing that will go somewhere is the gearbox. As long as you are gentle it shouldn't be a problem, that's my understanding at least.

FYI, an A6 2.7 Stage 2 BiTurbo will return 1-5 Mpg more than the S6 under similar driving conditions. 19-30mpg roughly.
