Oil change or not?
Re: RE: Re: RE: Oil change or not?
Do it yourself, all you got to buy is the oil and filter and washer. Get a good price on these, grab some help, and a ramp if possible and get dirty. Of course it helps when your next door neighbour owns MRC!theaxe wrote:How much would a dealer charge for an oil change?
Hell of a lot cheaper than any stealer would cost you. You also have the knowledge that its been done properly, and sooner than the Audiman says. Even if its just for you piece of mind, I think its worth it.

Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Lee, if you don't go put some Castrol Edge to VW spec oil in your car and continue to use it, the engine will go pop and Audi won't pay for it, because it will be user error.

RI_RS4,
I've read about your research in the USA on AudiForums...
Can I ask whether you are contending that the issue of the fuel dilution of engine oil you observe is a function of the fact that US RS4's are operating in homogenous mode rather than the fuel stratified (FSI) mode?
That being the case, are your results likely to be observed here (for example) in the UK in European RS4's?
Thanks.
PS: Are US RS4's not marketed as having a 4.2 FSI V8?

Having read this interesting thread and decided to continue my current plan of servicing once a year (I only do 5-6k mile pa) and topping the oil up when the car tells me to, I need to buy some oil. Listening to the comments of others above who are far more knowledgeable than I, I am looking for some Fuchs Titan GT1 stuff.
I only want to replace the 1L bottle I got with the car - this is now in the car following a low oil warning (car has now done 3.5k miles and had just come in for a pit stop after a long high speed cruise down the French autoroute).
Opie oils seem to be good value but I only want 1L so don't want to pay £5 postage. Any ideas where can I buy Fuchs on the high street?
thanks

I got 8L (2 x 4L) from Guy down at Opie Oils for £68 delivered to my front door.
Buy a 4L can for half that and keep the rest for when you need it.
That works out at < £8/litre.
I'll be changing my oil every 5K miles, but then I plan on keeping the car for at least 5-7 years.

To those unsuspecting enthusiasts who monitor their oil changes....
Inspite of Audi's technical data in the handbook, the capacity of the RS4 is ~9.5 litres, not the approximately 8L that the handbook indicates.
I recently changed my oil after 1500 miles and drained 8L from the system.
9.5L was required to bring the level back up into the appropriate range on the dipstick, which was highly frustrating bearing in mind I'd only ordered 8L of the Fuchs oil.
This suggests the odd behaviour of the oil level on my car was the result of either, Audi only putting 8L in the system in the first place, or, my car burning 1.5L in 1500 miles.
I don't believe the latter is possible, as that is way out of the range even Audi suggest as a worst case scenario, so option 1 is my favoured explanation.
This being the case, what you will observe even if you follow the Audi recommended procedure of measuring your oil level is, when cold, the oil level measured using the dipstick will be well below the acceptable minimum. However, if you bring the oil up to operating temperature of ~90C, it will be in the correct range.
Now that I have 9.5L in there I will keep an eye on things.

Yes I agree, I let mine warm up to 70 C and then switch off for 2 minutes to allow the oil to settle. Then check it. Never had any problems. Mine has used 750ml in 5k miles.SR71 wrote:To those unsuspecting enthusiasts who monitor their oil changes....
