We are after all not the founding Fathers of technology mere students who pass along the way however expert we may presume to be.

Discussed this very topic with a mate of mine who is a Bosch Motronic expert and he concurred off the record that this is not rocket science or do people on this Forum consider it to be just so?

‘Homebrew’ as are cousins over the water refer to it is not very sophisticated at the moment however it will progress and IMHO only fools stand in the way of progress.

With reference to Minhea’s comments I can understand that he can imagine engines going bang all over the place however this has been and will remain to be the entire history of engine development / tuning.

And as he says it would probably be very handy for them to have a spare engine however my hat is off to those that have the balls to have a go.
I like your point and it is well made. For me it really cuts to the real purpose of doing 'homebrew'. I really don't think the guys who get into this sort of thing are in it to reduce the cost of remapping their cars, and I am sure there won't be enough critical mass to cause the tuning houses any commercial problems - hell if S2Tuner is correct then he may even benefit from the doomsday scenarios about to wreak havoc on VAG cars all over the world. Although the subject fascinates me and I have books on the subject of tuning I know what my expertise is in, and it ain't this.

If I think back to when I rebuilt and dumped an engine in my first Escort they were great times - did I do it right, will it start, will it blow up? You accept the risks as that was part of the deal. It's no different to risking your baby on the track. I say good luck to the guys who want to have a go. The only thing that is rocket science is rocket science and I am sure there are a lot of people out there who are capable of doing it. Some will have expensive learning experiences and I assume you have the money to get back on your horse.

Sorry for the long post but it would have taken longer to write a short one

Cheers Dazzer and this takes me back:

Building and experimenting with engines is a great experience and in the old days prior to ECU's was a relatively simple path of development. Months of avid reading / thought mapping out the spec, then getting all the parts together / machining / head flowing / balancing Etc. Then careful assembly micrometers / pipettes / plastigauge / long nights.

Then finally the engine is installed - oil pressure built up - plugs in place and fire her up, man what fun!

So now we have ECU's in the mix and it is inevitable that the enthusiast will view this as just anther part of this process. Something to be learnt and ultimately mastered.

I think this is a great idea.... for those who are willing to experiment. New idea's shared openly could even benifit tuning houses like MRC who can research what is working with other people - different style of maps etc and further develop their great maps. I would like to see MRC using higher FPR and smaller injectors to improve economy for example...

There are quite a few homebrew S4 tuners out there running 450BHP + over the pond... they are obviously doing something right. Unfortunately there will be a few big bangs along the way... but hopfully we can learn from these and it may become a benifit to the community as a whole in time.

Mihnea mentioned sometime ago he was going to look into fueling and improving economy at some point when he has a little free time. Not sure if he's has some free time yet, but would like to if theres been any progress on this.

All my fueling does is get worse. :(

LMAO indeed... what other people get! My car is acceptable, I just know it could be so much better with some work in this area.

To be fair - I didnt pay MRC to make my car more economical :P
