RS 6 discs cracked @ 13.5k - warranty?

Post by ChrisB » Wed Jun 25, 2003 10:18 am

My dealer says it *might* be able to do them under warranty, but I'm paying for the pads regardless. I think that a car like the RS 6 should have brakes matched to it's performance and therefore cracked discs shouldn't happen at less than 14,000 miles. I also think that cracked discs will have increased the wear on the pads (OK, only slightly, but it's the principle!).

Should I be taking this further to ensure warranty service, or should I just take it like a man?

You should be getting it all under warranty

Try another dealer mate
They MUST be replaced under warranty and because you cannot fit new discs without new pads they should replace those as well Free of Charge
I have had 3 sets of discs and pads all FOC (my discs were all warped)

Are these the drilled discs? I chose not to order that option because of reports that drilled discs are more susceptible to cracking. Now, if Audi offered a grooved disc option instead ...

It should be warranty work mate.. I know that the pads take a big hammering on the RS6 but even so, 13,500 miles is nothing. The car is hardly run in..

The other option if they don't play ball is to have the movit fitted

This seems a bit worrying, especially when I have been lnown to be bit heavy on the brakes and also with the fact that I am currently having a bit of a wrangle with Listers both in Cov. & Worcs. over the brakes pads making a grinding noise when stopping at slow speeds.

I was told it is nothing to worry about, its just dirt on the pads, but when questioned as to whether or not it will groove the discs I was catergorically told no as they should be good for at least 60k miles.

Are these the drilled discs?

Nope, they're the standard discs;

Id be telling them to go and fu&*K themselves... You paid like tonnes of bling for that car, its barely run in and they want you to foot the bill for new pads! a big ,,|,, to them I say..

I'd never pay, flatly refuse, give them the car back, whatever... that would really annoy me.

Ooooo, they're pretty! I'd be interested to know what a metallurgist would make of those. (Trying to think back to my A level Chemistry, from over 30 years ago!) That wasn't what I imagined when you said they were cracked. It's more as though the metal is highly crystalline and is parting at the crystal boundaries.

Pretty f***ed up I'd say!

The cracks run all the way round both front discs. Given that some seem to be wider than others, I'm assuming that they've grown progressively over some time period, so they may have been there for a lot longer than the last 1000 miles since I found them.

Anyway, I spoke (finally) to the service manager and he says no problem on warranty replacement, he agrees that the pads will have suffered extra wear as a result (so I should get those under warranty as well) and if I'm not happy to continue driving the car, he'll sort me a loaner as long as it takes to get the pads and discs in.

Given that the old girl's developed a spot of braking vibration, I might have to take him up on the offer, especially if I can blag the dealership A8 demo car...
