Head unit adaptor

Post by optionclick » Mon May 07, 2007 12:41 pm

My new S4 has the poverty-spec head unit and no CD changer.
I'm looking to get an aftermarket unit and changer. Apparently you can get adaptor plates to allow the fitting of a standard-sized head unit. Any ideas where I could get one from?

Dont forget - either you use an iso radio loom converter - as an after market head unit requires re-wiring new speaker feeds to the rear ..... unless you want to completely waste your time and run it through the rear standard wires/amp which are ok...... (using the iso loom converter) the best ideal is - you replace the lot ...... which is what I did, Becker unit, Infinity reference speakers, aerial booster, 10 disc sony cdc) take a look in Audio/Electrical forum, its well worth it..... :smile_smoking:
happy dayz .... party ....

Not wanting to hijack this thread or owt but .... This is one of my main concerns as i too am considering an ICE upgrade... mine's a Pre face so I have a slightly differnet centre console to that shown above but my main worry is that an aftermarket head will end up sticking out of the dash where as the OEM unit sits nice and flush and looks like it belongs... only reason i wanna upgrade really is i'm fed up of having to go into the boot everytime i wanna stick a new CD in, a head unit with cd player would be all im after ... are there any OEM CD heads that i could replace mine with?

get a phatbox to go in the boot, relativley cheap (approx £200) equivelent to 150 - 200 cds and works through the standard headunit
noggy blue s4, mildly modded

have a look at Becker, they almost look OEM (as long as you get the red LED ones ;) ) and quality is much better.

good suggestion whisky180, and one that ive contemplated before but i'd still have the issue of having to go to the boot the add a new cd to the phatbox cartridge. i.e. if going ona road trip with some mates who bring sum cd's along for the ride that i dont have.

Becker ones look good, but expensive (yes i know u get what u pay for in the world of audio). I've done sum hunting around and is there any reason why a cd head unit from say a newer A4 or A3 .... such as ... 8E0 035 186L (or similar out of a slightly newer audi) wouldn't be able to just bolt straight in?? might seem daft but this is probably and ideal solution for me... but is it possible?

having actually picked up the S4 yesterday, it seems that the factory unit feeds data into the dash display. Is is possible to keep this data feed with an aftermarket unit, or would I be better off just trying to find an OEM unit with CD player?

I'm actually not too bothered about a changer in the boot - I'm planning to plug in my iPod instead....

No aftermarket unit will feel the dash.
