Whats the BEST brake fluid???

Post by viperbl » Mon May 14, 2007 9:19 am

My brakes are a little spongy after some spirited driving these days...

My thinking, since I already have the RS6 calipers and B7 disks is that I should get some braided hoses (should have done this before!) and some top of the range brake fluid ...

Thing is, I am not sure how this works, is DOT 5 the best? is there anything better? I assume I have DOT 5 at the moment(checking later on), which means not ideal if its boiling already ...

Cheers

DOT 5 is silicone and to be avoided IMO. A good DOT 4 is good for road and a DOT 5.1 if you fancy spending 3 times the amount of money.

Proper race fluids are very hydoscopic so need changing regularly.

Cheers guys,

So, by the looks of things, try 5.1 to see how that fairs, unless I am already using it, in which case the only way forward is to go for some proper race fluids which are very expensive! Any recommendations??

Been to see the garage that did my brakes, they put in 5.1.

Told him the problem, he said I could go to Castrol SRF, which I would not boil, but, it costs 35 quid a litre.

He said I would need around 3 litre's for the system, but would need another couple of litres to flush out the current brake fluid ...

Thats gonna be hard, to flush 70 quid done the pan!!!!

Flush out the current brake oil with a cheaper variety first, then fill up with SRF. I just bought 2 litres. 2 litres is enough for your car. You definitely wont need more than 2 litres.

If you go on ebay you can get some deals on SRF. I paid £61 for 2 litres including postage.

If youre paying £70 its still a deal, as most places it around 38 quid per litre going up to £44.

Flush with very cheap thin stuff to let it run and take all the deposits that may have accumulated out.

Not bad, you toped my bargain price too is that was including postage. I think you need 2 litres in case you bought only one.
