Well I ummmed and ahhed about this and ended up with a Snooper S6R Neo.....The reason for this was it has GPS for the fixed sites and a Radar/Laser detector for the new & mobil systems. The only thing that it doesn't do is Laser Jamming which can be rectified with a seperate Laser Jammer.

I paid £370 from Snooper UK

Jeff, The price now is £439, did you get a good discount or have they gone up since you bought it?

Is the Snooper actually any good ? I read a review that was criticising it ( here ):
The new Snooper S6-R Neo comes complete with GPS speedtrap detector, radar detector and laser detector for the most coverage in a single package. However, the word on the street is the detector is based on the Snooper SD 715, which isn't a very good detector.

Anyone got any first hand views on the Road Angel with laser detector ? Here is what the review site had to say:
If money is no object and for absolutely full protection and the very best equipment you would go for the Bel Target LE 850 Laser Diffuser, a Bel 966 and a Road Angel. For slightly less you could go for the above but have a Bel 550 instead of Bel 966. The realistic choice with money in mind is the Road Angel with laser alert and Bel 550. Check out the comparison guide here. Beware of buying a cheaper radar detector - you'll end up throwing the thing away with the constant false alarms

Cheers

I have the Road Angel and I am very pleased with the fixed camera detection side of it.
As for the laser detection side of it I would comment that it only has one detection head (that we would all put in the front of the car) but does have the option to purchase a second head with extention cable that will allow you to fit it in the rear of the car with the cable routed to the front detection head. Even so this will only detect laser by which time you are nicked, assuming the gun is aimed at your car and not the car next to you. My opinion is that the laser detection aspect is floored in so far as it will detect but you can still get nicked. In my opinion the only sure fired option is to then fit laser diffuses(SLD920) front AND rear. As for them being illegal, it has not been tested in court as the first person to have been charged for using them bottled out(IMO) and pleaded guilty.

Bearing in mind all this is to stop points getting on your licence to allow you to stay mobile. Paying the fines is not the problem otherwise you would not be looking to spend over a grand on the above equipment, as well as increased insurance premiums. There are other ways of staying moblie while serving a ban.

So should you invest in this equipment and run the risk of committing a criminal offence or should you us your "investment money" to pay the fines and cover the cost of "other ways of staying moblie". In the last 18 years I have only had 3 points on my licence for exceeding the speed limit.

Just some thoughts. All up to the individual though.

I've got a Snooper SD715iS detector and it's pretty good. Gives plenty of warning before Gatsos, not tried it on mobile cameras/speed guns yet. There is a good review of it here. The Snooper S6-R Neo is basically a GPS based system combined with this detector for mobile camera/speed gun detection. It does give some false alarms but I'm prepared to live with this due to the fact that it cost so little. Got mine for £50 off E-Bay.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
After making the original post I got talking to some of the guys in the office. One of them, on the way back from Monaco in his DB7 , was approached by a local gendarme while he was sitting in his car, parked illegally. Anyway, he rather foolishly had his detector in full view on the dash and after a quick 'wot is zis' from the gendarme he was up for a GBP1000ish fine. So I guess if I do go for one it's best not to blatantly have the thing on show!

I have the Valentine 1 which is an excellent bit of kit! I attach it to the sun visor and it sits just next to the interior light of my S3 and is completely unintrusive. It also has rear detection so no need for seperate wiring and another unit in the rear. It also tells me if the radar/laser is coming from the front/side/rear which is great to filter out the false alarms. I had a snooper before, which is completely useless in comparison - the only time it went off was in a petrol station or if the mobile camera's/guns were pointed directly at you!

I imported 10 2 weeks ago from the States to save on carraige. They are exactly the same as any unit you buy in England (they are all bought from the same place!). The only difference is I'm selling them at £350 inc. delivery instead of £599!! I have one left if anyone's interested.

I've just come back from South of France after 2 weeks hols ...amazing what can now be achieved with silicone!... with my Valantine 1, which I got from DanS3, fitted. It saved me twice from radar, gave some false alarms mainly near service areas and I am pretty happy with it. I spoke to some french friends whilst there and they confirmed that the gendamerie do get upset with detectors but they first have to see them. So if the unit is tucked at the top of the screen on its suckers it is very hard to see. I picked up the power supply from the map lights so there was no dangly wiring to give the game away. What I, or rather the wife, did do was remove the unit approaching tolls as there are often police floating about there. I don't think it would save you at very high speed but I was on cruise at approx 100 MPH for 9 hours on Monday and no probs.

Will the valentine1 warn of aproaching gatso's, and which cameras are active on the m25 ?

I really needto buy a detector if I'm to keep my licence, but can't decide which is the best to get.

Dan, have you still got that one going spare if I want it ?

Cheers,
John.

I'm glad it worked for you, Nigel! We'll let the other boys on the forum mess around with the "underdog" detectors

Anyone have any idea why the Valentine One is $400 stateside, and £530 this side of the pond ? I mean, I know we get ripped off over here, but that is bullsh1t. If it is the same unit, which it appears to be, then we are being charged double. That sucks.
