Retrofitting cruise...
Retrofitting cruise...
Anyone done this ?
I know that AMD, APR and Fontain all have a go, but charge around £300 for the pleasure. It sounds relatively simple if you know how to connect the stalk to the ECU, and once you have VAG-COM. I'd kind of like to do it myself, given that the parts amount to about £70. If anyone knows the secrets, please tell all...
Cheers

Re: Retrofitting cruise...
What about the wiring loom ? who's gonna supply that
Re: Retrofitting cruise...
Didn't I speak to you earlier ?
I tried getting the info out of AMD and Fontain, but they weren't particularly forthcoming. No surprise really.
I am quite determined to find out, as I have a number of friends/colleagues with fly-by-wire VW/Audi cars that would like cruise if it is a matter of a £50-£60 stalk, and a bit of time. Thought this would be a good place to start.

Re: Retrofitting cruise...
I cant remember of the top of my head but the parts only cost around £15 (stalk etc)
But their must be a wiring loom made up which plugs into some ECU module, and then its got to be activated using the VAG tool.
A couple of hours work as the steeringwheel has to be taken off and then the loom installed along with the new stalk!

I've seen it done on the internet, IIRC the plug you need to connect to is down in the drivers footwell to the right.
I can't remember where I saw it, but there was mention of cobbling together a couple of switches first (in place of the stalk) and connecting them to the multiplug, then I think you had to activate the cruise using VAGCOM
The guy who had documented this, then suggested (providing it worked with the cobbled switches) to go ahead and fit the stalk etc...
It was probably on Audi-world, or one of the other enthusiasts sites. A google search should unearth it.
Sorry I can't be more specific, but certainly it can be done, and is quite easy IIRC.

Re: Retrofitting cruise...
Had an interesting discussion with my dealership (Epsom Audi) yesterday.
Basically, they will retrofit cruise for £160 plus parts. Now the main part (stalk) for a 99 S4 is about £60 from VAG-Parts. They are sorting me a complete parts list of what is required, but I reckon this could come in well under the prices charged by aftermarket firms such as Fontain and AMD, with the added bonus that it won't affect any warranty - and better it will actually be covered by the warranty !!!

Re: Retrofitting cruise...
I had it done to my 90 quattro about 7 years ago for 1000 AUD.
Worked fine.

Re: Retrofitting cruise...
Carps I could be interested in this, is your dealer saying , you get the parts and we'll fit , or we'll do the lot for £160 plus the parts ??
Mine is an S3.

Re: Retrofitting cruise...
It's £160 to do the job. They are just finding out whether or not they will accept me sourcing the original Audi parts (VAG Parts), or whether they would have to fit from their own stock. Either way it is cheaper than any of the aftermarket places !
Re: Retrofitting cruise...
Has anyone checked the Official Audi Erwin manuals or the Bently manauls to check if all is explained in there?
I don't know what AMD's hourly rates are but I'm sure Star Performance were advertising this for £195. I just couldn't see it on their web site. Carps that's a bit far for you to travel.

Re: Retrofitting cruise...
Final score is that Audi will only fit the parts if they supply them - they say it is a warranty thing. However, they are willing to discount the parts, so cruise fitted and warrantied by Audi comes in at a smidge over £240. Not bad really - especially since it costs about £400 as an option on a new S4, and since the aftermarket boys are charging in excess of £300 for the same job with the added risk of Audi UK getting upset if there are any warranty issues.
Anyhow, as a final result Epsom Audi are going ahead with the fitting next week That includes all genuine parts, including all necessary connectors and wiring looms, and the warranty
