RS2 Intercoolers

Post by Greg_S » Mon Jun 23, 2003 1:37 pm

Is it a difficult job to fit the RS2 intercooler to a standard S2?

any modifications needed? finally, whats the damage to carry it out?

cheers

Greg,

I haven't done this personally but am investigating alternatives to possibly suit a re-positioned throttle bodied S2 engine.

I had a chat with one of the chaps from Forge at GTi this year and he gave me some really favourable quotes for custom intercoolers. Since most of the price is labour and the labour varies little with various intercooler sizes (mainly making and attaching the end tanks), he said £400ish. Just supply them with a CAD drawing for quote. I haven't taken the front end off yet to measure but I wanted something as large as possible to fit the standard S2 bumper and making it much taller (plus a bit thicker and wider) if the cross-over pipe disappears. Playing with ideas at the mo and just deciding if now is the right time for a custom inlet manifold too. I know that this means a re-designed cross member but that is a really simple bit of fabrication.

Water spray is certainly a very efficient way of increasing the cooling capacity of any intercooler since water has fantastic thermal properties. Could be an alternative for you??

www.autospeed.com has a kit for misting the intercooler - do you know of any other kits Lee?

got the impression that the water spray for the S2 didnt make a great deal of difference ot it?

Or was that the water injection type systems?

That's what I thought - but what happens in properly chipped cars? The standard car gives slightly more boost with higher inlet temperatures to try and give you consistant acceleration - there must be a safeguard though when the inlet temp goes through the roof it cuts back. I would like to hear more on this from someone who knows more than me (most people!).

Re: RS2 Intercoolers - Question for Andiroo...

The autospeed kit is really neat. I have the full article at home. It certainly uses water efficiently by a crude but effective method of predicting boost so that it cools the intercooler before the engine comes on to boost. It basically looks for 'trends' in the frequency that high boost is used. Looks neat but know no-one who has tried it on an S2. I will certainly fit one of these whichever intercooler I end up using for stage 1.

Andiroo is running water injection in his RS4 (heard rumours that his motor is running over 700 bhp when the NoS kicks in: ture Andy?). I believe he has it triggered to keep manifold temperature sub 40 deg C. Can you give us some details Andy on the effectiveness of this product?

Cheers
