ESP Light
ESP Light
Hi guys, new to this place.
After help though.
Hello first.
In my 2000 S4 Avant my ESP light comes on when it shouldn't....
I have run VAG COM I can not see why my ESP light comes on under hard acceleration.
Usually in third around 5000rpm but it can happen in 2nd lower down.
I have used VAG COM to record wheel speeds and other ABS/ESP sensors all are fine and no fault codes anywhere else.
A quick run recording engine values also looked okay.
Boost pressure maximun at 1750 ish as requested and a 1010 tickover.
MAF peaked at 204 under load 5-6 at tickover.
Labdas both peaking at 8-10%
Any advice on what I could log and what the values should be to check MAF, etc. Have had a quick go but not sure how to verify that the answers/graphs are good.
Car still pulls well. Is it a good idea to try a FATS test with the ESP off?
Light does not come on then.
At least I can be confident in the engine then.
It looks like I need a trip to a specialist.
Can any one recommend the easiest to get to from Weymouth?
Thanks in advance.

Hi & welcome , i would check your tyres , if they are a different brand or have different tread depths this will be the reason. grizz

Second what Grizz says. Had same issue on my S4 a year or two ago. If you search you'll find commentary on it. My issue was different tyres front and rear, others have had the same.

RE: Thanks
FATS time with FATS off on my car was about half a second quicker.
I get my ESP come in all the time in second and it can in 3rd from time to time, but to be expected with my power... I wouldn't have thought a standard S4 would be having trouble unless you have REALLY bad wheel alignment/tyres?

Another run.
Hi Zero, having same conversation on audi-sport but there I am newtos4.
(Gonna change that now I think.)
Just did another run but couldn't do FATS due to traffic.
Got 1790 and 1820 mbar on the two turbos and 228.3 on the MAF
This all sounds good to me. Is it?
With the ESP off all is fine. Is the wheel alignment something a normal tyre place can do or is it a special job?

YAWNI get my ESP come in all the time in second and it can in 3rd from time to time, but to be expected with my power...

A yawn (synonyms chasma, oscitation from the Latin verb oscitare, to open the mouth wide) is a reflex of deep inhalation and exhalation associated with being tired, with a need to sleep, or from lack of stimulation. Pandiculation is the term for the act of stretching and yawning. Yawning is a powerful non-verbal message with several possible meanings, depending on the circumstances. It is also claimed to help increase the state of alertness of a person. It could possibly be from lack of oxygen. The exact causes of yawning are still unknown.

Tyre wear, tyre pressures and most importantly the make of tyre! If the tyre brand or model is a low grip tyre you will always spin the wheels and therefore the ESP will come on. Another thing to consider is whetehr this problem occurs on the same stretch of road - could be a crap road surface or diesel spill?

That all looks pretty good for a stock car.Just did another run but couldn't do FATS due to traffic.

Need to go to a proper 4-wheel alignment place! With the ESP off all is fine. Is the wheel alignment something a normal tyre place can do or is it a special job?

I'm getting it at the mo with my Toyo's on the rear at first put it down to tyremould release as i know from past experience that Toyo's can take a good 500 miles to wear in but then off superb grip. If i don't turn of the ESP ( its off 99% of the time) then when under harsh acceleration in 3rd/4th then the the ESP will kick in bloody annoying when over taking. Also finding a lot of what feels like torsion vibration coming through i'm assuming this is down to the tyres as well although did change the ARB's at the same time.

I used to drive with ESP off all the time. I then put Michelin PS2's on the car and there is no need to turn it off at all - it very seldom comes on despite booting the car quite heavily off roundabouts and the like in 2nd/3rd. I reckon it's down to tyre make/compound and maybe pressures.
