Electric Cooling Fans

Post by westwell » Mon Apr 02, 2007 4:32 pm

I have a problem with the electric cooling fans, the fan in front of the air- con rad runs almost constantly at full speed like a jet engine. The fan engine side of rad I have never seen work. I have replaced the fan controller and the temperature sensor that controls temperature gauge to no avail. Turning aircon off stops fan running. Driving me mad! Hoping someone can suggest a cure.

Thanks Dave

Sounds like there is a problem with the viscous coupling on the engine fan. This should be spinning all the time while the engine is running. The electric fan is probably trying to make up for the fact the other one isn't spinning.

Sorry I probably didn't explain my self properly. Viscous fan is fine, electric fan behind rad is the one I have never seen working.

The fan infront of the rad is for the aircon. Maybe you are low on pressure so it's running more?

The front one I think only comes on when you have the aircon on and its quite hot - and so needed for the aircon to work. I have a FMIC and so dont have this fan... its more for really hot days when you are stuck in traffic to keep the aircon cool.

As Leon suggests it is needed for cooling the aircon condenser.
When stationary you need airflow though the aircon condenser other wise the pressure in the aircon system will rise. The pressure sensor/valve in the aircon system will switch on the fan when required. On warm days if the front fan is not working or removed, it can lead to the electro magnetic clutch on the aircon compressor burning out.
