just to add to the above post..you can also get done for speeding on the ring..and if you crash and hit the armco you will be charged for the damaged and also charged with speeding/reckless driving..i took all my documents when i went cos if you get knicked you mite have to prove the car your driving is yours..
the police charged my friend 90 euro,s for speeding and wouldn't release him or his car until he proved it was his..his brother faxed his log-book to prove it..

So insurance has to cover any damage that happens there, because it is an open road, and if they refuse to cover something that happens there you are legally entitled to sue them IMHO.
True unless your policy excludes it, which many now do.

More info here: http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/insurance.html

Anyone planning to lap needs to ensure they have comprehensive cover (you get 3rd party by law).

This is another thing that drives me absolutely insane about UK insurance policies. This sort of stuff, along with some other things that pi$$ me off only happen in the UK and I can't believe people have to swallow that sort of cr@p.

oh well.... disclaimer for my previous post should read "apart from if you're insured in the UK" then...

I've spent a lot of time recently looking into the insurance situation at the 'Ring and it seems recently it is quite a hot topic. For those who think they are insured because their policy 'does not' specifically exclude it then take notice of the following thread from PistonHeads:
Bad bad news. Some of you will have seen the thread on my insurance complaint (can't find it any more, sorry, was November time) after my crash on a public day at the Nurburgring. After nearly 5 months, this has now been fully processed, including a decision by the ombudsman.

Basically, it turns out that I should have known better. The ombudsman has noted that the Ring is a circuit and that my policy excludes circuits. All my arguments about public roads and laws and going from Adenau to Nurburg on it are invalid.

So, no money for me. Thanks to all of you though for support and those who bought bits of the old car, a porsche 968CS. You truly have helped me get back in the driving seat where mere insurance could not. On Saturday I picked up my new (actually quite old) 944 racecar which I will be racing in Class 3 of Porsche Club this year. Maybe it's not all bad after all.
Pistonheads thread is here:

This really is a fecker and rules me out as a driver on this trip unless I want to pay a seemingly small fortune in specialist insurance!

Of course, those who aren't bothered either way then good luck!

I would'nt assume it either - i checked last year and even checked again this year even though it was the same insurance company although everyone will be 3rd party right - by law?

yes quite oddly you are insured 3rd party. As usual the devil is in the detail and to a certain extent I'd agree with those on PH who say 'challenge the decision' in the courts as even my policy doesn't explicably name the Nurburgring as an exclusion - just one way deristricted toll roads! I imagine one day someone will win a class action on this.

I would ensure that you talk about the Nurburgring and the Nordschleife as two different things. The Nurburgring is the race track.

just had a word with my insurance about this and they say any kind of reference the the ring will invalidate my policy if anything was to happen..he also said that insurer,s are getting fed up with the "it happened on the way there" line also..
he,s looking into getting me some cover for the weekend..he said it will also cover going ballistic on the autobahn too..

The Nurburgring entrance looks quiet this morning! I was a little surprised what the first car is I see going on...
