Ebay ones tend to be cheap and cheerful. prob is you don't get to use half the features in Vag-Com because they're "dumb" interfaces. it's worth splashing out a bit more and getting a genuine Ross-tech lead which will work with the very latest versions of Vag-Com.

and as a bonus you're supporting the guys who write the software and not some fly-by-night fleabayer who is trying to make a quick buck on the back of someone elses work.

there you go, world beating Audi diagnostics with morality built in, lol

Surely I would need some software on the pc that you plug it into though?

indeed. the "dongle" has the software license built in so all you need to do is download the latest software from the ross-tech website and it will recognise the genuine dongle and enable all the features, a fleabay one doesn't have the license key so won't have all the features

good, if people buy the ross-tech ones it's supporting the people who develope the kit, might even bring the price down

Dave,

Is there a UK distributor, or do I have to get one direct from ross-tech in the states? Also, there are a couple of options of cable on their site. I'm always a bit nervous about ordering the wrong thing. Assuming that I want USB rather than serial, then there is 'HEX-USB+CAN' at $349 or 'KEY-USB' at $249 listed for the RS4 B5.

I already have a cable, but it's a fleabay one, it works, but its use is limited. I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, a vag-com expert, but I aim to learn. Can you tell me what the difference is between the two cables listed for my car?

Cheers

Jarv

i think the +can one is capable of diagnosing newer cars like the B7 RS4, mines the key-usb which works fine with my B5 S4, i got mine from the states, couple of days delivery at the most. there is a uk agent but i just went to the source as the exchange rates were so good (or rather the wife did, xmas prezzie)

Cheers guys.

Deed done, ordered a KEY-USB one direct from ross-tech. I think the exchange rate will definitely be in my favour, and I'm in no immediate hurry for it. If I don't get stung for any import tax, it will work out at around £145 including delivery.
